Let me the first to wish everyone here that celebrates the 4th of July a fun filled and safe holiday. As for me, I've grew up in an age where we had alleys to play in. Cherry bombs and M-80's were available, of course dad would be the one to decide, because mom would say no way. My dad was a big kid himself, so my brother and I would have some of everything. I've had my turn at lakes, cookouts, swimming parties and firework displays, so it's time for the next generation to take over. My wife and I will spend our 4th at a movie and a quiet evening on the patio with a beer in hand. I hope to see the rest of you back here on the 5th.

PS:
I grew up in the 50's, the best decade this planet has ever seen here in America. If I could go back and live out my life then, I would do it in a heartbeat. 47 ford convertible with Zebra seatcovers, summer nights smooching at the lake with your girlfriend, drive-in movies more smooching, ducktail haircut and Elvis, life doesn't get any better than that.

Here is another person that remembers everything that you mentioned, Harry. Those were truly wonderful times, and the times that made wonderful memories. Lugers were cheap back then, but I never had any money(had a girlfriend.....perhaps that was the reason).

Ah, nostalgia! Very similar memories. My courtin’ coupe was a ’30 Model A Ford with a white rolled and pleated Naugahyde interior. Going to the drive-in to watch Ma and Pa Kettle, tilting out the folding windshield to set the Cokes and popcorn on the cowl, pivoting the spring loaded gearshift lever out of the way so there was nothing in the way of snuggling on the bench seat. Ducktail haircut and Elvis included in the mix. Sadly, that is a carefree time that probably marked the pinnacle of life in these United States. One of the benefits of being a geezer…we will always have this snapshot in time to cherish. God bless America indeed. Thanks Harry

I must be younger..Who is this Elvis guy? I remember buying a pair of Beatle boots..I thought my fathers head would explode..My first car was a $65 47 Chevy. Had a back seat as big as your living room couch and we could get ten kids in the trunk for the drive in. Gas was .29 cents a gallon. On base I could go to the movies for .25 cents. .15 for a ticket and .10 cents for candy. My main source of income was 2 cent pop bottles beside the highway. you could usually find a dollars worth in an afternoon. A dollar went a long ways back then.

Aaah, the good old days. On 7.04.63, I was about 3 weeks into boot camp at great lakes NTC. I shall never, ever forget doing pushups on the asphalt ginder and thinking (thimking), this not fair...today is a day off. The beginning of the rest of my life. Even growing up on a farm, we always had the 4th off. It was sacred.

12 months later in 1964, I was driving a Submarine..not at the races though. That was about the time that Fred (Fnorm) was flying out of Cubi point, looking out for us (we prayed) and trying to find the real Submarine racers.

Good on us, monsoor charles never could figure out how to get a bumboat, sampan or even junk to submerge. We did though, put enough holes in anything and it will sink. We'uns could however get back to the top. It was sort of a...forgive me please...huge bl*w J*b.

God bless us all, I am so proud to be an American and a guest here with you folks. Stand proud.
