Just wishing to thank the host of LugerForum and its administrators for a site that lets folks add photos without having to use a photo hosting site.....so much easier.

Wow! That is the most unusual sideplate I have ever seen. It is most definitely a hand made item. I will warn you to DO NOT SHOOT this Luger if that left toggle knob is cracked... It will end up in pieces, and possibly harm you.

Thank you John I will most certainly look at this closer when I get home, hadn’t noticed it.had no plan’s of shooting it until it was throughly inspected due to its age.

I would particularly like to see the sideplate removed, and good clear photos of both front and back (inside and outside).

The Toggle knob may not be cracked, it is hard to tell from the photos so far, I hope it is not. This is a very unusual specimen.

Here in this photo enlargement is why I suspect the cracked toggle knob.

I would strongly suggest that you get in touch with our member G.T. (Gerry Tomek) at gctomeks@msn.com . He lives in Chandler, AZ not far from you, and can give you an expert craftsman and gunsmith's evaluation of the condition of not only the toggle, but the entire gun.

You might also want to check the toggle lock under the right toggle knob. It's not pointed out as often as it should, but the dished toggle Lugers need the toggle pulled straight back about 3/16" before lifting.

Most ham-handed gun dealers and their uninformed customers just yank up on the toggles.

I was lucky. My lock wasn't broke.

I’ve put another handful of pictures on my picture test post for those interested ,I’m seeing now what John S. Is saying about the side plate, it’s missing the protrution towards the front if that’s his meaning.
As stated with its having just the single serial number below the barrel with GERMANY below it and a DWM scroll on the toggle I’m certainly curious about this piece myself.
I’m just hoping it’s not going to turn out being a junker only worth its parts.

Larry, it's very unlikely that the side plate was made by the DWM factory. The external profile is quite unusual and different from the parts turned out by DWM.

This is why John would like to see both sides of the plate.

Understand that very few gunsmiths have any experience with Lugers, which is why a reference to Gerald was included above.

Guess I’m really fortunate to have a expert in Lugers so close to me,I’ll most certainly contact him to evaluate this pistol. In the meantime I’ll take the side plate off and get some pictures for John.
