Default Facebook groups

Hi all,

The last couple of months I have seen quite a few forum regulars become active on Facebook groups for luger collectors.

The last few days I have been very disappointed by the complete lack of knowledge and an apperant lazyness of Facebook luger group members. And I see our regulars struggling to educate a growing number of users there. I tried but give up. So instead of trying to explain, debunk fairy tale stories and counter plain stupid remarks, I decided to leave those Facebook groups.

Looking forward to normal, educated and interesting topics on the Luger forums.

...but not on Dumbbook...

Vlim pretty well sums up the Facebook experience. An awful lot of experts typing feverishly from the safety of mom's basement. But although I resist the urge to engage in full blown pi**ing matches on the subject of Lugers, I admit to enjoy going head-to-head on politics.

I try to encourage them to join the forums and buy books.

Always amazed at people who buy without any knowledge...

Me too, then they come here and post :
"What have I got and how much is it worth?"

As for facebook, I don't trust them- "they" are so far left and "anti"- I find it difficult to believe there is not some hidden reason they "allow" "gun talk". Or maybe I'm just a little paranoid?

Since we are basically pawns of Facebook's marketing algorythms, and as such, we're presented mostly with soothing entries from among "friends" and stuff we may respond to, what's been described as "echo chambers" is the result.

actually the facebook gun pages are removed frequently - if they think you are trying to sell anything, you get banned for a week, or your facebook group can be banned.

A year or two ago they banned a bunch of sites in a short time.

I use facebook for several reasons.

1. keep in touch with family and friends who otherwise it would be much harder to keep in touch
2. Meet other people to expand my horizons (hah)
3. I'm not anti-technology and because of my job, I literally need to keep up with it, since I am old as dirt (those older than me, are simply, old)

NOTE - it is handy for local area events, hearing about folks from my high school who die, seeing wedding stuff that I would not make it to, and many other reasons. I can also un-follow folks who are irritating as hell or I decide I simply don't like (i.e. I can still be on the S&W FB pages but not see Joe Menkowski's stupidity)

Ed,
I understand about the "job".

But seriously, meeting other people "online"? "Danger, Will Robinson"!

I will spare everybody the rant - but my heartfelt advice is to stay as far away from face***k and similar sites as you can.
I've been using, programming, building, and designing computers long before most people had ever seen one or knew what one was. "I know better."
In addition, that site was designed for teenagers, and that's what you get - teenaged angst and DRAMA.

I lump Twitter, Facebook and the others into a category I call "Twit face". Generally I avoid such nonsense.

Facebook represents the greatest and most effective invasion of privacy in human history.

It's voluntary making it even more potent.

Never forget that the largest customer for Facebook related tracking and relationship data is governments. Not just friendly governments.

I have an account purely as a defense against someone else opening one in my name. This was actually happening several years ago where I worked.

I have to sort of chuckle at all these posts rounding on the evils of social media. Any website that allows users to contribute content is fairly described as social media. Including say forums discussing collectible firearms.

There's a saying in Silicon Valley about "free" websites and applications- "if you can't tell what the product is - you're the product". I wish all my fellow collectors/products the best!

well, on this forum, John Dunkle does not sell information, no stats, no ads, no interference.

He pays out of his own pocket. I have told him for years to quit doing it.

Compared to this forum, the Facebook Luger groups are kindergartens. And I'm not going to run around changing diapers there ...

John D. is doing all of us a great favor

I agree John D. is doing us a great favor. However, I hope everyone is aware that ISPs record and monitize all of our internet activity, and that it is all analyzed with sophisticated algorithms. I guess I'm an incurable cynic, when people are watching me from the darkness (they can see me but I cannot see them) I just don't trust that they have my best interests at heart. On the contrary.

Nevertheless, the benefits from many sites including this one are so great that the risk is, at the moment, worth it.

I use sites like FB just like Ed does - mainly to keep in touch with distant relatives. I use it even less now than I used to, given how careless FB is in both protecting its users and allowing bad actors (Cambridge Analytica is only the most famous example) access.
