Default Swiss Luger, New Territory for Me

My field of interest has always been military Lugers, and I know virtually nothing about the Swiss variety, so seeking enlightment, I turn to my fellow gurus. I have been offered (sight unseen) a 1929 Swiss, serial #71130, described as having brown plastic grips and mag bottom (with Swiss cross), and in 97% condition. No holster or accessories. Firm asking price is $1975. Is the seller off base?

Hi Aaron,

A M1929 Bern with serial # 71130, according to the V. Bobba book info. should more than likely have the later black plastic grips and magazine. Brown switched to black plastic in the Ordnance lugers around # 65xxx. Even with a couple of hundred guns overlapping, # 71130 seem a little late to have brown plastic, IMHO.

The firm price seems a bit high. I would hope to pick up such a # 71xxx gun in that condition for around $ 1800 or so from a fellow collector...a bit more from a retail dealer with retail shop overheads.

The folks at FGS are selling this one with holster for $ 1750 (see bottom of page) :

(This one is an even later # 73xxx also with brown plastic).

Simspons has a few late Berns in the $ 1900 to $ 2200 price range in strong 96% + condition.

Thanks Pete, I suspected that it wasn't a bargain.

Hi Aaron,

If you are considering only adding one (1) M1929 Swiss Bern to your collection, I would suggest holding out for a red variety...either Ordnance or one of the more rare commercial ones with the P as part of the serial number (not to be confused with Ordnance P-dated released lugers).

The red ones are striking in their color beauty and contrast and are more desireable amongst some collectors and command a bit more at resale time as well.
