Eric, thanks for the link to the article.

I have it in my archives somewhere, including a German language translation of it for Mauser
But what I really like is the photo of the old drop forge at Mauser, as I recently acquired an original die from one of those forges. The photo shows how the die was mounted in the forge.

Tks, Its like a fine bottle of vine! It ages with time!! Can you please explain the significance of the 'drop forge' as its all new to me and I'm sure most! This photograph dispels the suggestion that the stock lug was retained for the construction and dipping process!

A quote from Fred Datig in the Luger Pistol, Second Edition, page 305,,"Some very interesting technical data concerning the production of Luger Pistols was brought to light by Herr August Weiss, former luger production head at Mauser/Oberndorf. For instance, the number of machine operations necessary in producing a Military Luger of normal specifications was (in 1939) 642. Each group of 642 operations averaged an elapsed time consumption of 78 minutes. Of hand operations for a givin pistol, the total was 136 which required an elapsed time of one hour and 12 minutes. Consequently, it required a total elapsed time of two and a half hours in which to perform the 778 combined machine and hand operations necessary to produce the finished product. Page 305~
