Ralph Shattuck

It saddens me to inform the Luger Forum that Ralph Shattuck died today, on his 81st birthday. He has been in failing health for the past month or so. I don’t have any information about final arrangements.

While Ralph, in his later years was somewhat controversial, there is no doubt that he was one of the leaders if not THE Leader in making collecting of the Luger a great endeavor. His passion for the gun inspired others to learn about and collect this beautiful, deadly, but fascinating thing we call the Luger.

His knowledge was encyclopedic and anyone who spent any time with him came away more knowledgeable.

He taught me a lot and I hope he was my friend.

My thoughts go out to Nancy, who BTW is having her own health problems on the loss of her husband and soul mate.

I will miss him. May he rest in peace.

I am deeply saddened by the news. Ralph was probably the best known Luger person other than Georg Luger himself. He was a man of impeccable character and integrity. I feel blessed to have known him and shared many moments with him at the Reno shows. I hope they set up his table anyway at the Reno show in three weeks with a flower on it. God's speed, Ralph!

I'm really sorry to learn that Mr Shattuck passed away.

I had visited with Ralph many times over the past ten years... We talked about most eveything but Lugers...He was a man, of far more depth, then just a great Luger collector. He was the consummate gentleman, He will be missed! .... til...lat'r...GT

I am sorry to hear this, on every occassion that I met him, to include 3 or 4 visits to his house, he treated me with respect and friendship.

When my wife's father died, we were on our way back from Texas and stopped for a few minutes, which turned into several hours. He was gracious and friendly to Terry, making her feel better.

A friend that saddens me that he is gone.

I saw this last evening, and wasn't quite sure what to post.. Ralph was a dear friend, especially during a difficult time many years ago. I'd like to think, in some ways, I was an ally to him when he was having some difficulties as well. He will be missed, not only as a friend but as well, among the Luger Collecting fraternity. Nancy and his surviving family will be in Jen's an my thoughts and prayers.

We will all miss seeing our friend and luger guru "Uncle Ralph" at the shows, for the past 50 years. I'm still impressed with his patience in advising new collectors in our early stages. He will be missed. TH

Much more than a collector, Mr. Shattuck was a historian and teacher that helped develop the standards we follow today.

Certainly he was a good business man. Money and marketplace are the things that support higher goals.

We are better off for his wisdom and company.

May his wife and family find comfort in memory of his love and life!

I just heard of Ralphs passing, For the last 7 years 'Old Gramps' was both a mentor and friend. Both Debbie and I will miss the Man in the Red Jacket! Debbie and I finally got to meet them both in Orlando, two years ago. You never know when it might be your last!

I went to the Shattuck home one morning to pay them a visit. I rang the front doorbell and waited. After a few seconds Mr. Shattuck came to the door. With a pleasant "Good Morning" he opened the outer security door and shook my hand. It was then that I noticed he had a Luger in his left hand. I asked myself, "Where else could you bet met at the door by a man with a gun in his hand and be made to feel so at home" ?? It's moments like that which I will truly miss as they uniquely Ralph Shattuck.

Ralph was a true gentleman and a credit to the gun collecting fraternity. I knew him and rubbed elbows with him at various gun shows for about forty years, ever since I first met him at the Great Western Gun Show, where he was a respected fixture for many years. I wonder what lies ahead for his prestigious collection.

A true gentleman and a gracious host whenever and wherever you met him. He always treated my wife and I like long lost friends whenever we ran into him and Nancy on the gun show circuit and his door was always open. Ralph will be missed by all that knew him.

Aaron, my understanding is that Ralph's prestigious collection has already been thinned out a bit with sales to some "special people" who have had high interest for years. It is also my understanding that many, if not all, the remainder will find their way to Pheonix Investment Arms. Ralph has had a close association with Tom Etowski for several years now. I'm sure we will all pay close interest to the web site in the near future.
