Default changing to 6" barrel

Can the Stoeger or Mitchell Arms Lugers be modified to accept a 6" barrel if originally constructed with a 4"? What about a Mauser vintage 1917? do you have any suggestions as to where to get the barrel? What is involved in the replacement, is it a gunsmith thing, or a do it yourself thing?
