Default My New Luger

Hello... I am new to the forum as of yesterday, so be kind, and I hope that this is the correct section to begin as I could not find a "New to Form" section.

I inherited the Luger from my dad who got it from his Uncle Jimmy who came back from WWII with it. Same story as everyone else, I know, but I believe it to be true because great uncle Jimmy said so!

I shot it as a kid in the late fifties and sixties, and it has been used minimally since the sixties! A thorough cleaning has revealed that the hold open spring is missing, and it appears to be a well used gun that should be used rather than preserved.

The top of the receiver is stamped with 1936 and S/42 is on the middle toggle. The SN is 6345 with an 8,S2 under it. There are three marks on the front right of the receiver; two drooped wing eagles, and what appears to be a stick figure eagle with upward reaching arms and downward lines like wing feathers.

I also have what appears to be an original holster with the letters G. B. stamped on the inside of the flap!

Any help in identifying this gun would be appreciated, as it does have sentimental value, and I would like to take it to the gun club and shoot it and talk story!

welcome to the forum

I moved this to the New Collector area.

Pictures are needed to help get beyond the obvious

1936 (year made) - S/42 - Code name for Mauser - eagles on the right are two acceptance markings and one proof marking

Not sure about holster, pictures needed

Ed

Hi Dalet and welcome to the forum.

You can learn quite a bit from our reference FAQ pdf. Download it from:

http://forum.lugerforum.com/showthread.php?t=13121

Replacement hold open springs are available. They are small and thin, but with care you can replace it yourself. I am sure LugerDoc has them in stock.

Post some pictures when you can, we can be of more help after getting a good look at your pistol.

And don't store it inside the holster. Keep them separate.

In addition to "6345" there should be a suffix letter under the numeric digits on the front of the frame above the trigger guard. That suffix letter is part of the serial number. The "8.82" is a bore measurement representing 9mm Luger caliber. S/42 was Mauser's military concealment code.

If it's all matching, realize that breaking a numbered part during shooting would reduce it's historic and financial value. That said, the Mauser made Lugers had excellent metallurgy and make good shooters.

Welcome to the forum Dalet. I believe that you will find this forum to be quite respectful to new(and old) members. There is a phenomenal amount of Luger knowledge on this forum, and the folks are more than happy to share it with others. You found the correct spot.

Thank you for the kind welcome!

I will post pics as soon as I can figure out how to download them to my computer. It seems that IOS and Windows do not want to play nice after their respective 10.0 upgrades.

Thanks again
Dale
