Luger ???? Buffed markings?? How can i get them back
I am in the market for a luger, but i found one that im looking into. I have a few ? It looks to have been parkerized, then someone polished the parkerized finish trying to make it shiny, it did a decent job of that in the areas he could get to, but the markings are pretty much invisable now. Do you think they are gone for ever or would they still be there, and if they are how can i try to bring them out? I think who ever parkerized it put alot of it on there, making it fill in the markings. You cant even see the date on the top of the reciever.
Or do you think the gun may have had the markings ground/sanded off. Because the stock slot is gone, or was never their? How much should i offer him for it? Thanks Jarrod M

Jarrod,
I would pass on it. They couldn't have filled the markings with parkerizing. The markings have been buffed off or it was a commericial that didn't have a date and proofs to begin with. It's only worth a couple hundred at best. How much are you wanting to spend? Ron

I would like to get one for $300 like the stories ive been hearing. I mean i would give more for one up to $700, but thats my limit pretty much. I would like to get one that will increase in value but one that im not afraid to shoot, a little. Like, from now untill i die, i will most likely put less than 5 boxes of 9mm through it.
Do you have one or know where i can get one. I was told by another luger man that the early ones are more for collecting because the steel was more brittle and prone to crack and break, and also that i shouldnt use the barrel i got. Im not sure if its a NOS barrel or a replacement, no markings, large front sight??? I payed $120 for it. If i find a nice luger that doesnt need a new barrel i will sell this one. Im going to call my local friend and see what hes got tonight. Thanks Jarrod M

Jarrod,
The stories you have been hearing, are stories you've been hearing. $300 Lugers don't exist. Sorry, I don't have any to sell, but if you can dig up another $200 or so. And watch the on-line auctions, you might find a low end collector/ shooter grade Luger. $800 to $900 is about the lowest you'll find anything worth having for. If I run across one I'll let you know. Ron

Jarrod, so you just bought a Luger for $120??!! Pretty hard to beat that no matter what the condition as even the smaller parts would be worth more than that! Anyway, you might have a gunsmith check it out as it could be your shooter while you're on the search for something nicer to collect/display.
My shooter is a mismatch of pre and WWI parts and it shoots fine. The receiver/barrel is 1913 yet I'm not afraid of the steel failing. A lot of people here fire Lugers that old. Just have it checked out first like you would with any used gun you buy. How about posting some pictures of this gun, it would be interesting. |

I think he has a $120 barrel, not the whole gun.

$120 for a barrel makes more sense! It's probably been 30+ years since decent pistols went for that...
