Finally A Not So Dumb Question From Eric

First I tried taking this luger apart and could'nt get it back together. Finally I sent it to one of our Luger Elders who repaired it as long as I promised to never disassemble again. This leaves me with my original question after properly reassembling it. Whats with the strange notch thing and what was its purpose?Anyone?? Your truly Rubber Gloves? And Thanks again to You know who!! PS Is that a name on the side plate? can anyone id these cute little thing?

Eric, that notch is where a Walther (magazine) safety was anchored. These were installed along with Schiwy (sear) safeties about 1934 on police Lugers but the mag safeties were deactivated (or removed as in your case) by order of the Interior Ministry. If I recall, this Luger has Landjägerei markings, so this is perfectly normal.

You are a wealth of knowlege!~Does this chart demonstrate how many know are there in this police district? My serial number is1940t L.Ka.124 Is there anyway to track down to whom it was issued. PS One of my all time favorite sources!

The chance of figuring out who had it issued are very, very slim, so I would say no.

Eric - For your information. This is what the intact mag safety looks like. It is very rare to still have one on the pistol.

No and yes

there are folks who knew the german soldier and so, that gun was known who it was.

Serial numbers were written in solider books and thus a gun 'could' be found and yes, I am a romantic like you bud

as we were walking in at the ft lauderdale gunshow in 2005 between hurricanes. Never saw a satin lineing! Only wear is around muzzle. Can anyone ID the weird holster!

Eric, that chart includes all from that district known to me about three years ago when I finished the manuscript. I've added a few more to my database since. Also in that chapter of HWIS you can find how many were issued in that district.

I agree with Ed about the near impossibility of identifying an individual policeman to which this pistol was issued. It would probably require the discovery of a period inventory from that district.

Thank to you both! You give collecting a whole new perspective, But we must be aware that todays diversions will somedays treasures. The fact is there are a finite amount of genuine lugers, more and more seem to disappear each year do to neglect and disrespect and outright greed. My favorite is my test luger luger. Check Point Charlie had one for sale and if my funds were commited else where there would be no question. Like finding a virgin in Saigon in 1968, from what I'm told providence is priceless. Start your self a 'Luger Chrismas Club' Of find someone that you can pay a little each month. I bought my first a 1906 Frenchy and my last, my 1937 Kreighoff an amount each month, The value of the gun your purchasing is appreciating and everybody makes out. Good Lugers never go down. Eric, The lining in this holster was put in by someone somewhere along the line. It is NOT original to the holster.
Likely a subsequent owner who thought the leather of the holster was rough.

Jerry have you seen this style of "P" in p.08 on other holsters? it(and the period) seem a bit more stylish than regulsr block letters .John

It seems to me the luger was a pass me down. No regiment would allow a holder to try to etch his name! I'm trying to find a way to make it more prominent, Maybe if I could get a list of the regiment or do sme luger DNA!
