Yet Another Valuation Question
I'm looking at a byf 42. About 85-90% original finish, some pitting on the front gripstrap. Good grips, no chips or dings. All matching numbers except the correct magazine. (The shop was kind enough to let me disassemble it to see for myself.) They're asking $1,300. Allowing for its being in MD, where Lugers are rare and guns of any kind run consistently higher than in the free world, is that a more-or-less reasonable price? It's on consignment and I may be able to get it down a little.

How bad is the pitting?
$1200 sounds better than $1300, but the price doesn't seem too bad, especially in a retail setting. Good gun, good shooter. Plastic or wood grips? Any holster, tool, of spare mag? Regardless, work on the best price, and go for it IF it is what you want. dju |

I would pass .Save your money and wait for a nicer one with no pitting and 95% or better blue.

M2:
Ask yourself what do you want a Luger for? Collecting, shooting, investment? I thought about it over night and am starting to agree with Bob. That pitting could be a real deal breaker, so proceed with caution. Heck, if you still want it why not low-ball them, all they can do is beat you up and throw you out of the store... If they won't take a low offer ask them if you can take photos to share with the Luger Forum. dju |

Wood grips. No holster, tool or spare mag. I think I'll offer them $1,000 and see where it goes from there. I don't think they'll throw me out - I bought a Series 70 Gold Cup from them last month, so they know I'm not pissing around.
