Default Unit Markings on 1910 DWM Military Luger ? ? ?

My 1910 DWM has the following unit markings on the front grip strap:

6.R.D.2.6

Does anyone know what this designation means?

Can someone advise where I might find information on WW-I units and their history?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Luke

If the R is a Capital Cursive with a slight slant, (like it was italicized) the marking PROBABLY means 6th Reserve Infantry Division, Second company pistol number six .

You should understand that although there were "Official" ways of property marking pistols, the rules changed many times and, as always, G.I. armorers often did their own markings.

Hope this helps.

Luke, According to Jeff Noll's book on "Imperial German Regimental Markings" if the "R" is the same style letter as the "D", this would translate to a Recruiting Depot, if the "R" is more ornate, it is probably a Reserve Dragoon Regiment.

Tom(s),

The "R" is more ornate than the "D" and the "R" does, indeed, have a slight slant. In addition, the last "6" is smaller than the other numbers and letters. Does this add any further information?

Thanks for your input.

Hi Luke,Auto Mag,8/2001 has an article about"Lugers of the Dragoon Regiments"by Still you might want to check it out.My guess is 6th Reserve.Dragoon Regiment,2nd Co,gun number 6.That is if the 'R' is script. Good hunting sounds like a great pistol,Regards MC

Luke

The last number in a unit mark is supposed to be smaller that the other letters and numbers, if the mark was correctly applied. I agree based upon what you told us that this Luger was issued to a Reserve Dragoon regiment.

Joe,

I thought the "cursive" was for a Cavalry Regiment. I assume that the Dragoons were Cavalry;am I correct?

Since I have at least one example of Third Reich Lugers, I am beginning to get interested in Imperial Lugers, maybe they will be my next point of collecting.

Hi Marv,I think that the Dragoons carried carbines and the Uhlans carried lances hence the names.I'm not 100% on this but do know that Dragoons were part of the cavalry.Maybe some of our historians will enlighten us.My MOS was 11B3S ,Regards,MC
