Ted,
Can you give an opinion about what makes some Lugers more accurate than others? Bore Condition? Tightness of frame rails on receiver? Trigger characteristics? All of the above?

My opinion is BORE condition has less of an influence than most would think. The basic design of the Luger contributes to a very accurate platform. The things that I have noticed is a tight toggle to receiver fit seems to have the most influence as this maintains the alignment of the front and rear sights. The trigger pull is not really an issue if the shooter has good skills and can maintain the sight alignment until firing pin release. Lugers have long mushy triggers which really foil good shooting by some folks used to a crisp modern day gun's trigger. If they have any flinch at all when releasing the round, a Luger will accenuate this where a modern day gun is a little more forgiving. If you can move the rear toggle side to side much when the gun is assembled, accuracy will probably suffer. The other thing that kills accuracy is not being able to see the sights. I am lucky in that I can see the sights when firing for accuracy. I use a seated position with my progressive bifocals I can move my head until I see a very clear front sight, that helps a bunch. When I walk back up to my target and see groups like this, I have to shake my head in amazement that a gun this old and with this short a barrel can shoot so good!

Luke,
Hotter loads, will sometimes increase repeatability. Strap the gun solidly so that the recoil will not move the frame and see what the grouping becomes.

Man, I love seeing my Luger target shown whenever Ted gets asked a question about Luger accuracy!!
He is so modest that he doesn't ever claim that his marksmanship has a lot to do with it. Lugers are accurate by design, like Ted says. It is one solid lock-up when it fires and if you are holding on target it will put the bullet there. Everytime I open the case that American Eagle is in the first thing I do is look at the test target. And then..I fondle the pistol. All I can say is that it looks as good as it shoots and it has the great seal of the United States of America on it! (C'mon, what else can you ask for?) Hugh, no I decided not to mess with the original grips to the Erfurt. They are too nice and I think that I will only clean them up.

Steve Zigman's 1918 Erfurt. The bad looking spots in the after pic is just areas, I didnt get gun oil on. They are not blemishes. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" />

Patience, Ted. As soon as I can rework my budget, you'll be getting my 41/42 for the same treatment the Erfurt Artillery got. I swear the Erfurt shoots so much better that I can't resist seeing how the Mauser will look and shoot once you've finished with it.
