Default Opinions on Navy rig (no pistol)

Hello,

Today I picked up in trade this rig without a pistol. I am not familiar with Navy items, only saw a couple of pages in Pender's Luger holster book regarding Artillery/Navy holsters.
I separated every item and it looks like the holster and stock have been together for a long time...
What do you guys think of this rig?

Thanks.

SORRY, I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE PUT IT ON HOLSTER FORUM, BUT DON'T KNOW HOW TO MOVE IT...

Hi Clifton, The holster is not a Navy, it's an Artillery with a converted closure, the magazine also is not Imperial Navy, but the stock has possibilities. Can we see more photos of the stock, the back of the magazine pouch, and some more of the straps? Regards, Norm

Clifton.. Norm..the magazine also is not Imperial Navy..I see a crown M on the left
side...?? Maybe? Like norm says better photo's are in order. The body should not be blued and early Navy magazines had concentric rings..

I agree with Norm, the stock has some merit..Is there a serial number on the iron? It would likely have an "a" suffix if so..Is there a small Crown M on the steel disc?

The pebble grain double mag pouch is interesting..again I agree..need to see the back. Inside too.

The carry strap has some merit, I would like a photo of the belt clip with rivets? Also the holes on the strap? The adjustment studs too?

Does the loading tool have any markings?

Closeups of the wooden barrel on the cleaning rod? Barrel looks a tad fat for me but it could be the angle. The rod appears to be Artillery length not Navy.

I would like to see the bottom of the toe/wrist strap..It might be Navy..I cannot see an Artillery stud on top nor any rivets on the bottom, Is it sewn at the bottom?

Hi Jerry, Imperial Navy mags have large numbers running along the long axis, and tinned tubes, not blued, as you said. Both ringed bases, like the one shown, and the regular dished type are both proper.
Hi Clifton, How long is that rod? Regards, Norm

Norm, Not all of them! This mag has been overstamped..ostensibly with a Kriegsmarine marking..Might have been Weimar..I am not up on later Navy stuff.

I am adding more pics. I was going to mention that the condition of leather on holster is like new in those places that were covered by stock and so is wood on stock is much cleaner where it was covered by holster...

Clifton, Thanks for the better photo's!

The stock appears to be an authentic 06 Imperial Navy..Originally the stocks had no steel disc..At first probably were not marked at all..then the Crown M you see stamped in the wood then the steel disc was added. Many of the 06 stocks will have the steel disc covering a portion of the Crown M. It does not have a suffix as it is an early stock.
Unfortunately the stock has been...I hate to say ruined but almost? The 4 holes you see in it are for the Artillery closure strap..they do not belong on a Navy. Worse than that..someone.. to allow the Artillery holster to lay flat..shaved out the half moon indentation below the stock iron for the nose of the Navy holster to sit/fit. The Artillery likely sticks out beyond the stock iron..It is way too long for a Navy stock. A terrible fate and disaster for such an other wise fine Imperial Navy stock. Of course the N1958 property number does not help either but this whole rig is likely a transition from Imperial to Weimar, to Kriegsmarine.

The cleaning rod which is Artillery looks better, It may be an original piece from the looks of it.

The double magazine pouch is a nice one..I would still like to see inside? It has a Weimar Anchor M on the front.

The Wood bottom magazine is as I suspected. Imperial Navy transformed during it's long life with the German Navy

You have a fascinating collection of important historical artifacts! Nice score!

The carry strap appears also to be an authentic Navy. The steel belt clip appeares at a later date when the German Marines fought on land..Flanders, Ypers etc. They modified these shoulder straps with the spring steel belt clip to hang off a combat utility belt. This is an excellent find..The adjustment studs found in it appear to be the Artillery type.

The toe/stock wrist strap is indeed for the navy stock and Navy holster as it is a navy type..not Artillery

Hi Clifton, Thanks for those extra pictures. The holster, as stated is an Artillery, as is the rod. The mag pouch looks legit, as does the stock, even though it has later Weimar Navy numbers. I hate the magazine, the Crown/M looks OK but nothing else does. I like the straps, but Jerry is the expert there. All in all you have some nice stuff. Regards, Norm

Guys,

Thank you for comments.

Jerry: there is a marking inside the pouch flap- looks like 1915 or something. And I also put pictures of the holster and stock the way they were when I bought the rig.
The tool is unmarked.

Clifton, Yes..Many Imperial Navy pouches were dated and maker marked on the underside of the top. They may have a VERY small Crown M on the middle right..The sueded leather can obliterate some of these markings as we see in your photo!

You have not mentioned the marking or lack of on the loading tool?

Well..your luck ran out then..HAHA! Could have been a big ol Anchor M! But I guess that's asking too much!

Are you a Navy or Artillery collector? You have a good start on either one..

Jerry,

I am collecting a bit of everything that is C&R and I buy the books too. I carry about 40 pouns of books in my car and only bought this rig because I had Pender's book on Luger holsters with me and found similar rig shown on page 240...
