Default Luger grip cutout

Is there a reason why this grip has a piece cut out where the arrow shows?

Sorry for all the new guy questions. I have a Luger book on order, but it hasn't arrived yet.

Your Luger is a Police model as evidenced by the sear safety. At one time it may have had a magazine safety; that is why the grip has the cutout. The mag safeties were later deactivated by either being clipped or completely removed. Is there a slot cut into the frame just to the rear of the sideplate that has been filled? I can't tell from the pic. If not, there was never a mag safety installed and the grips may not be original to the pistol. Do the grips match? What are the other details of the pistol?(manufacturer, any gripstrap markings, etc..)

Ken, next time can you not use photobucket and post the picture here, in that way, the photo stays as long as the thread remains, many times photo bucket photos get deleted or over-used.

Also, lots of questions are okay. Was this police luger talked about before today?

Any other police lugers you might have? What is the info on this one? DWM, blank, simson, etc.

Ken,

Are there any markings on the front grip strap?

Ed, sure I'll post the pictures directly from now on.

As far as I know, this police luger wasn't discussed before, and actually it isn't even mine, but one for sale. I noticed other Lugers with this cutout on the grip and I didn't know what that was about.

This Luger is a double dated DWM, the first date being 1916, the second date being 1920.

Generally speaking, on the back side of some Luger left side grips, the material is sometimes broken out next to the safety latch. I was wondering if this cutout was a typical Luger grip issue. As pointed out, the magazine safety was once there, but removed.

My curiosity is now elevated on this converted police issue as I wonder if the asking price is fair or not. The gentleman wants about $1100 I believe.

Don, I can't tell by the pictures supplied whether there are markings on the front grip strap or not.
