Lanyard...Any Thoughts ?
Picked this up on eBay...not a whole lot of money.
Ad said Dutck KNIL...but I doubted that as the style does not match what is shown in my 3 books on Dutch arms and holsters. In the back of my mind, I was thinking "Swiss"...only because of the style of some of the leather workings...nothing in my Swiss books point to this lanyard, either... Anyone have any ideas ? |

Pete,
Dutch Navy is more likely. I have 2 similar to yours, but with a square attachment piece for the swivel. See if you can make out the stamp 'Made in England' on the flat strap. It's faintly visible on one of mine. There are some photographs (also in the Dutch Luger) of Dutch navy staff wearing this style of braided leather lanyard. If I remember correctly Jerry once mentioned 'Portugese' as well, as both are pretty similar. |

Gerben, some good points..Pete. Nice looking lanyard. Really hard to pin down it's origin or even if it's a pistol lanyard or if it was issue or commercial.
It almost has to be commercial. The standard Dutch issue was a flat type. I am not aware if the Swiss issued a lanyard at all. You have seen probably more Swiss photo's than anyone else..ever see a period Swiss wearing a lanyard? That's pretty much what I have depended on over the years..Period photo's. There are some photographs (also in the Dutch Luger) of Dutch navy staff wearing this style of braided leather lanyard. Gerben, Are these Pistol lanyards? Often lanyards were used for many other purposes. As Gerben says...this is made in the style purported to be the Portugese Lanyard. I have never substantiated that the Portugese lanyard actually exists , was issued or where it might have been made. Anyway..A nice lanyard Pete. Jerry Burney

Will let you know if I see any markings... I do no recall seeing any swiss officers with lanyards...but since they rode horses, maybe some did...??? Just a WAG... Here is the link to the eBay ad and what the seller had written : http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...MEWN:IT&ih=001 |

Sorry for the bad photograph:
It's a detail shot of a Dutch navy troop carrying a Dutch navy luger (the P08 type) in the P08-style navy holster, the braided lanyard is clearly visible. Judging from the wear and shape of my lanyards, as well as from the photos I've seen, the lanyards were carried around the epaulette on the opposite shoulder, rather than around the neck as the auction photo shows. Jerry: A valid point: Lanyards can and will be used for a number of tasks, and I would be the last one to call it a luger lanyard, but it appears to have been in use as a pistol lanyard mostly. Near water lanyards make sense. This is one of mine: |

Guys, I have one of the purported Portuguese lanyards, and it is made from cylindrical leather like an old Singer sewing machine belt. I am pretty sure it is a reproduction... it was a gift many years ago from our old friend and co-founder Patrick Villiers... I miss having his expertise around here... I understand he hangs out on Jan Still's forum... but I don't have enough time to read both. I only go there when a member here references a thread over there of interest.

Where does one find these Luger lanyards? I've been looking but have been unable to locate even a reproduction. I take they're pretty scarce, huh?

Me too. I was able to create an account once a long time ago but never could log in again when I switched computers (2 computers ago). I just come here where things are familiar (I fear change)...

Steve, If you can remember your UserID from Jan's forum, there is a "lost password" link on the first page where you can recover your logon credentials...

Thanks, John. But that's the problem. None of my usual username/email combinations are working and after several attempts it timed me out. If I spent another couple of hours trying I might could "break the spell" but, when I consider doing it I realize that I'm perfectly happy over here.
Maybe I'll give it another go later on but I suspect that it has an old email address I can no longer access. Perhaps I should just start a new account...

Steve,
Since I have 1 Dutch Luger in my collection and am slowly adding the "accoutrements"...I do a search for "KNIL" on eBay and the European eBay sites and eGun for Dutch KNIL items... I was just luckly no one else saw the item. I won it for my opening bid...but I am embarrassed to tell what my max. bid was...glad no other bidders exposed that... |

there is a photo in a book, showing soldiers from norway with a lanyard on the luger.
lugers from the portugal-contract were sold with a lanyard in the middle-70s regards klaus

Steve, try checking with Ed Tinker, since he moderates over there as well. He may have database access to that forum and might be able to look you up based on your ID, location, etc... and maybe he can set you back up in the same user account. If Ed can't do it, surely Jan Still could if he has time.

I looks like I won't have to worry about getting a lanyard to round out my collection since most were never issued with lanyards.
