Newby to the Forum

somewhat new to the luger world but very fascinated. I have a couple gems from my fathers collection and I am very interested in acquiring some additions. Relocating to the Pacific North West from the East coast I have no contacts. I am somewhat leery of on line purchase as I believe pictures only show what the seller wants you to see. If their is a particular web site that is trusted by members, that would be of some help. I do go to gun shows but rarely see lugers for sale. suggestions or advise is welcome and greatly appreciated.

I like to cruise the Simpsons Ltd. web site as they are a reputable dealer and offer good variety and good photos.
Also watch the For Sale column here, as members seem to be pretty honest.
And always insist on a 3 day non-firing inspection period.

Hi David, and welcome to the forum.

Check out our FAQ PDF for some good background information.

Stick with reputable dealers like Simpson's or Checkpointcharlies.com or Legacy-Collectibles.com.

You can still sometimes find decent Lugers at shows, but it's more rare these days.

Is your Mauser Luger a 41 or 42 date?

I have one (a 1939) that has a similar almost translucent blued finish.

By now, I've seen a number of Lugers with this bluing appearance. I am not sure why the normally deep bluing isn't present on these guns. Wrong surface preparation, solution temperature, chemical mixture, bath timing?

I believe it may be the lighting of the pictures, exposure and perhaps some over aggressive cleaning that has given these pistol's finish that "look" in the pictures.

The artillery and Navy would have been rust blued and the 42 date hot blued, and should not look as they do in the pictures.

I agree with mrerick on that bluing issues. I have seen several where the bluing just looks "thin" all over the gun.

I do not know if lighting was an issue when taking those photos but I will try to get some better pictures under different lighting. The arty and navy look nothing close to the Mauser as far as bluing or rust treatment. I do see halos very clearly on all three pieces. Spoke with my father who believes the navy and arty to be untampered as he put it. I appreciate everybody's input and dispute nothing. I am willing to be schooled and enjoy the chase. Thanks fellas

would it be correct that the suffix of the frame barrel extension on the byf 42 is the sm letter L or is it possibly another letter? Most of what I have found on the subject of suffixes seem to depict a small loop in the shape of the L and I'm not seeing that here.
