what does "correct holster" mean?

Hello All,
Would appreciate your opinions on this issue.
Have learned that my holster for my 1939 42 code was made in 1915.
When I bought the rig recently it was advertised as "correct holster".
What does "correct"mean in this case?

Honestly, a "Correct" holster would generally be any holster with a date previous to the gun's date of manutacture. It is fun and nice to have a holster the same year as your gun, but the German army basically issued what they had, especially after WW1. The only exceptions are guns such as Krieghoffs, which would hopefully have a Luftwaffe marked holster or unit marked Army and police guns, which often had the same unit markings on the holster.

For a 1939 42 code it would be nice to have a mid to late 1930's marked holster, which would have been the most likely to have been issued with the gun.

The seller probably figured that a P08 holster would be correct for any P08 luger. I would say that a 1938 or 1939 holster would be alot more time period correct for your gun.

Agree with above.

When I am trying to 'match up', I look for either a holster;

1. A year before, same year or the year after, the same year being the best (but not always the most likely when issued)

2. A period or type, if its an army, then an army holster and not a police or a P38 holster (happens all the time, and that they came back this way)

IIRC, color is also a factor...If you have a Luftwaffe-issued Krieghoff, then a brown P08 holster would be correct...Would it not???

I actually disagree with that old theory, I have seen too many photos of pilots and the holster was likely black and not brown; even in B&W the brown holster I believe would show up much lighter, but I could be wrong.

With police, it is a common belief, which I believe is true that rural police generally carried brown leather and city police had black.

I believe Krieghoff holsters came in brown and black. Black being the most common. Bill

I can understand that perhpas the seller thought that any P08 holster was correct for a P08 Luger.
Maybe one day I'll spring for a 1938 or 1939 holster.

That pic of the 'mystery holster' that Jerry posted came up black in my browser...I had to download it & lighten it in PSP to see if it had the cordovan coloring...



...I'm still not convinced...
