Charles my friend, she's a keeper! Best friends are nice to have, aren't they?

As to being taken, if you want it, spend for it. Use the I want it rule, Seriously, $450-$650 is reasonable for a "shooter" although finding one for that can sometimes be hard to do?

And if someone sends you a file for posting, sir, post it where ever you want, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Charles... perhaps you could barter some web services to Mike as his website hasn't seen a refresh in several years. Just a suggestion... but I think his wares could be so much better displayed than they were a couple of years ago. Especially the work he has/is doing regarding reproduction of both the extremely rare Lugers... the .45 and the baby!

Good luck.

Charles, just take a laptop with you that contains the websites you have created...

Do a little creative work using stuff from his website and work your magic on it... and once you have established that he has something that you want... tell him how YOU can help HIM... You can do it. You're websites will speak volumes.

BTW, Mike is not 'currently' a member of the Lugerforum so give him a rundown while you are there...

Charles
Mike is a very fair person to deal with. He is also a very nice person. My advice is to go to mikes shop and Chances shop and ask alot of ???? then buy a few books and read them. Buy the best luger you can afford. There is a lot of collectors and dealers that will be glad to seperate you from your $$ Find a collector that is willing to spend time and educate you. Read all you can.

...Pitty I can not afford a laptop :-)

I must admit surprise that he is not a member here! From what I can glean offline this site has the 'best' collection of Luger fanatics around and it wouldcertainly seem like a natural place to go.

Still, I understand... John Jardine (another custom gunsmith I did a website for) rarely if ever posts online. So I can understand caring more about building product than the internet I suppose! (foreign concept to a geek like me tho!)

Anyhow, a good idea.

Russ thank you for your ideas as well. They too are appreciated and probably correct.

Speaking of such things, if you had to buy one book for under 20 bucks on the luger which would it be?

If you are really serious about learning about Lugers and trying to develop enough knowledge to avoid some of the pitfalls of collecting, under $20 isn't going to help you much. Why would you not spend $50-$100 on some detailed documentation to save yourself $500-$1000 on a bad investment? Look at Tom's first posting above, it is good advice.

Hello Charles,

Since your first luger is desired to be a WWII military luger, you might want to consider spending about $ 60.00 on Jan C. Still's book, titled "Third Reich Lugers & Ther Accessories". This can be purchased directly from the seller at :

Hello Charles,

Since your first luger is desired to be a WWII military luger, you might want to consider spending about $ 60.00 on Jan C. Still's book, titled "Third Reich Lugers & Ther Accessories". This can be purchased directly from the author at :

http://www.stillsbooks.com/

Used ones can be found at gun shows and arms book stores, sometimes for a bit less.

Books are great, but for developing the skill of spotting faked/boosted/forged pieces...as others have stated; go to gun shops, gun shows, auction preview days, etc. to get to see as many lugers in your hands as you can. Once you begin to see enough "factory original" finished lugers in your hands for yourself, some of the refinished pieces become more apparent and easier to spot. (This is not to say that even the experts can still be challendged with an expertly and spuriously refinsihed gun...done by a skilled, master refinisher). If you can find a more advanced luger collector near your home to help you "navigate" through a beginner's learning cycle; that is a good idea as well.

The Greg Martin auction house folks will have some preview days in early December 2003(not too far from your hometown). They will have over 10-15 lugers on display. Admission is free and you are allowed to pick up lugers from the tables to look them over. If you ask, I think the auction staff will take-down a piece for you, as well...

Here is the auction link :

Pete... <img border="0" alt="[typing]" title="" src="graemlins/yltype.gif" />

Charles, If I were looking for one book to start with it would have to be one of Jan Stills. He has four of them and each one is segmented to a specific era. Imperial, Weimar, Third Reich and Axis Pistols. So if your interest is in say Third Reich pistols you can buy one book that covers that whole Luger subject. If I am not mistaken most of his books are currently available from his website and they are $65.00 or so. A smokin bargain in my opinion.

I have invested many hundreds if not thousands in all the reference material I have and not only is it extremely interesting to read but has saved me on many occasions from grevious financial error.

Ron is correct, you will not get anything for $20.00 worth having and a little larger investment is necessary in this day and age of high dollar books.

If you are truely on this tight of a budget I highly recommend you stay away from Luger's altogether. It is an expensive hobby.

One other thing about purchasing a Luger book or almost anything else connected with Lugers, you can always sell it and get your money back. Jerry Burney
