Is that bare metal before or is that parkerizing?

Thor, that is excellent work. How long did it take to complete the restoration?

Ed, that is bare metal, the way the client sent it to me. I think someone removed the bluing with naval jelly but I dont really remember the details. This restoration was many moons ago.

I was wondering the same thing!

ETA - I see Thor already answered this. This piece is a thing of beauty!

Eugen, I dont recall how long, it was too long ago and too many Lugers ago, around 400 at last count. Parts needed, engraving work to restore partially obliterated markings, always add work and time. I used to be able to do the finish work in around a week if the condition was not too bad. But I have slowed down a bunch. This one took probably three weeks.

Thor,
that is a great example of patient work, terrible before and good after!

I would not have the patience nor the "heart" to undertake the work necessary to make that transformation.

Excellent work.

Any insight as to what made that particular luger "special" enough to be worth the cost to restore?

Oh, that is a good question. I do know the client said the guy he bought it from said it would never be more than a paper weight. I dont take even worse ones any more, just too much grief. It was just a double date Luger. Quite a discussion on this forum when I undertook the work. More before pics too. It was just a shooter Luger and the sideplate and take down were replaced.

Golly, that is masterful work. Thor, if restoring Lugers was an art form, you would clearly be considered a Rembrandt van Rijn. Amazing!
