Which Luger to carry?

Suppose that you were limited to carrying a Luger. Which configuration would you choose for its mechanical and ergonomic merits, regardless of scarcity and cost?

I would love 1900. Cute bolt lock + pencil barrel. Mechanically, I don't know. It should work. Swiss army tested it.

I would have to go with the so called 1905/06 special production "Baby Luger" with grip safety. 7 shot, 3 1/4 barrel. 9mm. Like the one they say George Luger made for himself and so often pictured in books. "size, weight and safety"

It doesn't matter what you think of the originally of the gun, the concept is a good one and if it was available on special order that is the one I would carry.

I voted for the Artillery, which is what works best for me of all my Lugers. I am about to pick up this 1906 9mm AE though, so my choice might change next week.

Weren't all original G.L. "babies" chambered in .32 and .380 ACP?

There are two versions of Luger "babies". You are correct with respect to the 4 (possibly 5?) scaled-down Lugers that were originally made in their small configuration. There were also a few 7-shot Lugers, including Georg's personal one, that were made by shortening the grip frame and barrel of a standard Luger.

I'd have to go with the .45 cal. US Test Luger if it's limited to originals. If not, I'd have a baby 45 made.

I always thought it would be a good carry gun, a 1906 with a grip safety, because you could carry it with the safety catch off, knowing that it would be "safe" until your hand contacted the grip safety.

I would carry a Finnish Luger w/120mm [4 3/4"] Tikkakoski barrel; squared Finnish front sight; in 7.65 Parabellum...Stock lug a must...

I would go with my 70's Mauser below in a nice holster. It never jammed for me, has been 100% reliable, has a grip safety and all the improvements.
If concealed I would opt for the 4" bbl.

if I were to, about the only "Luger" in the safe that would easily be carried is this, courtesy of the master, JM about 12 years ago.

As much as I love lugers I can not imagine carrying one for personal protection. To big to heavy and for me the wrong caliber. For carry give me my compact 45. Bill

I would use the one that never fails and has a good trigger pull. Not to light for accidently going off from being in a nervous situation and BANG!!!!!! and hope you meant to do it!

I own 3 Custom 45's and there is no other for stopping power. One shot and there down. the second shot can be used in court for premeditated. My Novak Browning is good for plates and targets but 9mm is not a one shot affair. And I know all the magnum people will chime in but the magmum's are to loud for me. There's something about a good ole 45 for security or a sawed off for a house cleaner.......

I voted other..and think the WWII era Mauser P08 with extruded mags and good ammo..would do about as well as any other 8 shot full-size 9mm pistol.

I suppose a Krause-werkes .45 or if you happened to have the #1 or #3 .45 test Luger..you could stick that in your pants and be about as well armed as anybody could hope for with a handgun...or at least..maybe use the pistol to barter your way out of trouble
