Why are there so few Artillery Luger postings?

Are they hard to find?
I have been thinking that an Artillery shooter would be a great for my second Luger acquisition next spring when I get my tax refund ... but if they are hard to find maybe I should set my sights on something else.

Because everyone wants to keep theirs after they get one!

I really do think that is true, however, they made many, many more of 4" than anything else.

Contact the big names and ask, or get a shooter 4" and drop a 6 or 8 inch barrel on it.

I have discovered that Artilleries are not really hard to find, at least four have cropped up at local gun shows in the last few months, there are quite a few of them for sale on-line.

But Ed is right, the natural proclivity is to keep them! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

And, they are -totally- great to shoot! They feel different from a four-incher, they sound different, and their accuracy verges on phenomenal, even hand-held (I have not had an opportunity to shoot one with a stock yet, a circumstance which I hope to rectify soon).

I didn't think that I was particularly interested in Artilleries until I bought one, now I am hooked, and pursuing the possibility of buying a second one--to collect, not shoot, this time. If you find that you are at all interersted, I highly recommend owning one.

Mine is a FrankenArtillery Luger, as guns made up from parts are called by our dear friend Kyrie...

I haven't fired mine in over 10 years, but I have to agree with the consensus that those that own them tend to keep them (unless they trade up for a better one!)

The problem with the 8" repro Arty barrels is no rear sight on them! IF someone would make a rear sight for these, it would be great for a shooter arty.

It is my understanding that Tom Heller either has in stock, or can obtain reproduction Artillery sights to fit on those new barrels.

Let me caution everyone, that a barrel and a rear sight change DO NOT an Artillery Luger make...

They only make an Artillery Look-alike. If the basic receiver/frame was not originally an Artillery Luger, then it would be ILLEGAL to attach an Artillery Stock to the Look-alike Artillery... without FIRST paying the $200 tax and registering it with the ATF as a short barreled rifle under the National Firearms Act of 1934.

Only Original Artillery Lugers, (including ones that have been restored by replacement of the barrel) can be legally stocked without registration because of their C&R exemption from the NFA. Check the ATF website for details on which Lugers that were originally available with a stock are exempted by ATF from the NFA.

Better safe (legal) [img]smile.gif[/img] than sorry [img]frown.gif[/img]

Also, as others have stated; once you get a decent Arty, you keep it...I picked up a 1918 DWM that is one of my favorites. It has enough wear & tear and evidence of shooting; so it has some "history" that my mint lugers do not have...
