As an afterthought. Regarding my Mauser sideplates:

If the S/42 has the 2 first digits in the inside middle, the BYF is somewhat different. The first digit (an 8) is at the middle but the second digit is a lazy 0 to one side of the plate (left side with the inside of the plate facing you).

My matching military Lugers:

1917/1920 DWM #5850i (formerly an Artillery) 50 on sideplate face 58 on the bottom, inside

1917 DWM Artillery #9936i 36 on side plate face 99 on the bottom, inside

Thanks Wayne, pictures are fine; numbers are just hard to see as they are not really deeply struck.
