Luger Tool- Must have?
I understand collectors pay big money for the right tool,
but my P08 is a shooter and I was wondering just how serviceable is the tool? Found reproductions on Amazon for $15- is it worth buying one to help load magazines or is it strictly a collector thing? Thanks! |

If you have a functional mag, it has a strong mag spring. If you plan to only load 4-5 rounds in the mag, then you can possibly get by without the tool. If, on the other hand, you plan to load the mag to full capacity, then the tool is very handy. It can help from producing discomfort in one's thumb, and allow full loading. YMMV

Having a good reproduction tool available for use when going to the range sure makes it easier on the thumb.

I never load more than 7 rounds in and never use a tool
but for years I never thought about it - as in the army we loaded thousands of rounds in 1911 and then later M9 mags and we didn't have loading tools

Hmmm - I don't have a problem loading without the tool - in fact, I find it's easier. Now if I were going to be loading 100+ rds, that might be a different story!

Once you use one, you will appreciate its benefit. JMHO.

Many reproduction tools are worthless for loading. They are made with a hole but not enough lip to grasp the follower button and they easily slip off negating their very purpose. Or the metal is so thick it pushes away OR the screwdriver tip is so soft it mangles easily.

I used a repro once, first time I used it on some tight grip screw it bent. I have never used a repro tool since.
A DDR tool or WW2 or earlier non-marked tool is $40-$65 and you will be much happier IMO

HAHA! That's actually a laugh out loud listing! The photo this guy shows..with 308 of these useless pieces of crap sold, shows what little lip there is on the wrong end! The lip needs to be on the opposite side of the thumb ledge. This tool and any like it are useful for attaching to your fishing line to get a longer cast but not for loading a magazine! 308 sold, 307 returned..one moron kept his as a pocket filler.

If you once use one of these you will never use the "official" tool again:

Hugh..I got two things against this thing..it's PLASTIC and it won't fit in my tool pouch! Help your friends..don't encourage them to buy ANYTHING plastic! Especially plastic guns!
But I bet it does work...

I use one of the reproduction tools for my range loading. It did not work as well as expected when I first used it. I fixed mine by placing a piece of 400 grit sandpaper on a FLAT surface and squaring up the BACK face of the tool. It works like a charm now. YMMV |

I think the price of originals is way over priced. People think they have a German WWII item and want to get rich off it. The repros work fine and you can even get them stamped with a phony mark - probably true of many 'originals.' If they don't work well, just file or sand them to work better. That button is a b***h to depress all the way with out one.

This is more practical loading tool. Though it says 22lr, it is actually made for the standard Luger magazine. It also has a catch to lock the follower down so that you can easily swab the inside of the magazine tube.

I have one of those HKS loading tools and I highly recommend them. As was stated, it is great for holding the follower down and cleaning out the magazine. Looks like they are out of stock.
