Default 1927 DWM Police Luger

I'm not really up on Lugers but not completely unknowledgeable either. I ran accross this Luger in a pawn shop Wednesday.

DWM manufacture, condition 85%

serial number 27xxq

no chamber date

all parts matching and numbered

has a sear safty

no military proof marks

has commercial crown/n proofs

has stock lug

front strap marked "S.D.II.49.R.1644" and X'd out

tiny eagle stamp on bottom of barrel above serial number

I've done some research and with the help of VIS35 over at Parallax boards we've determined it to be "1920 DWM Commercial Luger" produced in 1927 according to my sources (J.C.Still, "Weimar and Early Nazi Lugers"). Markings are Police.

"During the Weimar Era, the 20's and early 30's, a qazillion Lugers were turned out from left over parts, new made parts, left over Imperial Lugers and new made Lugers. A good rule of thumb is, if it does not fit in known variations it is probably a 1920 commercial. Short barrels, long barrels, super long barrels, scope sights and mounts, psuedo artilleries, navals, etc. almost endless concoctions. The serial with its attendant letter suffix pretty much indicates it started life as a military or at least a scrubbed military or possibly ex military parts.

It was taken in for Weimar Era Police use, the give away is the sear safety. This was strictly a police characteristic.

The grip strap markings are Prussian Police.

Prussian Police (Schutzpolizei) by directive 5 April 1922. Weapon no. 1644 of the 49th centuria within II command, Dusseldorf (S.D.)"

The only thing I can add is that the "R" in the marking indicates "Revierhauptmannschaft" which was apparently a militarized Police used in large cities as an adjunct to the regular police (Still)

I bought it for $400. Really a very nice gun. All matching except the magazine. Great crisp bore with a tiny bit of frosting. The front and back straps are worn. Some holster wear here and there. I took my books with me to the pawn shop and convinced them as to what they had. Blue book shows it for $400 at about 85% which is about the right % of finish for this gun.

There are a few interesting markings. The top one is the bottom of the magazine. Obviously not matching but appears to be Weimar with that E/63.

Does anyone know the significance of the tiny eagle above the serial number on the bootom of the barrel?

Here's a little photo layout of it.

Nice looking weapon. The pictures are great and do the Luger full justice.

Hi,

Your magazine base is a WWII military for a 1936 S/42 Luger. The "k" suffix and the droop eagle 63 tells us this.

The eagle on the barrel is most likely a Simson eagle and shows that this is a replacement barrel that the police added and was not originally on this Luger. The original would have the C/N on it.

The serial number on the left reciever is not correct, and has been added. It would be correct to have the 2742, but never correct to have the 2742 q -- the letter suffix was never added in this location.

CCMANO, You have a nice early Nazi police rebarreled/reworked (probably by Simson) Commerical (C/N) luger. Tom h.
