Hit the road guys. Rita is nothing to mess with. If you are within 50 or so miles of the coast pack them Loogers and insurance policies in the car and hightail it west or northwest. Charley passed within a mile of my house last summer and totaled it. Fortunately we were in WV during the storm as we are now. We had no storm surge, but that wind really tore up well built houses. It took nearly a year for us to rebuild, but the town will be at least 5 years recovering.

Have a daughter in Beaumont. She works at one of the refineries and brings the crude in from the gulf. If she (along with the others there) have to leave, gas prices will be going up. Even if they do not leave, if the ship channels are tore up, gas prices will go up.

(4 refineries feed off of that ship channel.)

FYI

I just talked to my daughter Gretchen on the telephone. As of the present time, a storm surge of 25 feet is expected in Beaumont. It takes a storm surge of 22 feet to reach I-10. She lives about a mile beyond I-10 so 25 feet could ger her house.

Her refinery is shut down, along with all of the rest in the vicinity. If it goes as predicted, they expect damage to the refinery as it is over 30 years old which means the pipes, towers etc. are not in the best of condition, nor were they built to withstand a big storm.

She (and her husband) left Beaumont for Dallas (where her inlaws live). Normally, it is a 4-1/2 hour drive and she and her husband has been on the road now for 9-1/2 hours and covered 250 miles. They still have 70 miles to go.

They could have went thru (or tried to go thru) Houston, but avoided it because the traffic in Houston is even worse.

People from Galvestion (sp?) are having difficulty getting thru Houston, much less beyond it.

If the storm does not lessen, it might be worse than Katrina.

Traffic is gridlocked going north, west and east of Houston. Decided to hunker down and ride it out! Put my entire collection (3 Lugers & one holster) in Zip-Loc bags.

South Florida is saying a prayer for you guys,!

If someone need safe storage of their collection (even post storm) I can safely store a number of hand guns in the armory.

Spent the past 24 hrs making the 6 hr trip to my mother's at West Monroe, La, the first 12 hrs we made about 60 miles.

It's looking like evacuating was still a good idea. I'm breathing easier on the west side of Houston but Devers looks like it's in the direct line of fire.

I don't think I'm going to this one, time will tell. Most agencys in the State of Florida have commitments with agencys in Mississippi and resources in this state are getting thin.

We just got a call from Minta's nephew who cleared the downed trees on our road and made it in to our house. We had no damage other than a few shingles off one corner of the roof. There is no electricity in the area, and it may not be restored for 1-4 weeks. We will probably stay here in north LA until it is back on. They are asking residents not to return until then. Praise God our prayers have been answered.

That's great news. Hope the damage is as light as you were told. Most of the people in our area had more damage than they originally thought--water in ceilings, etc. followed quickly by mold. The only reason to go back ASAP would be to secure stuff such as Loogers. Maybe taking a vacation where you are would be a good idea.

Glad to hear you, your family, and your home maded it thru the storm...

I agree with Al.....dont wait too long before you go back. If you have to get some MRE's, pick up a generator and camp out on your property.

Wolves will move in under the cover of clean-up crews and find those places that are unprotected.

Take Jim's advice--he is LE and has been on duty in the NO area. Also, we had several neighbors who didn't return for 3-4 weeks. Tons of mold and guess who was last getting repair help and insurance settlements.

Good luck. Again, our prayers are with you and the rest of the hurricane victims. Jim and I both were hit last year.

Years ago, hurricaine Floyd let me know it was time to replace my roof!!
I could have bought several nice lugers for that price!!

Has anybody heard from Hugh?? He may be wandering around TX looking for plywood, shingles, a generator, etc. with a Looger on his hip to keep off the armadillos and wolves. Say another prayer for him and his fellow survivors. Been there, done that last year.

Thanks for your prayers, they were answered. I finally got home today after countless days of working late and flying early. I do want to extent my deepest sorrow for those that lost their property and/or love ones. It was not as bad as Katrina, but any time a single life is lost, (in my opinion) it is a tragedy! We strive to keep everyone safe, but it is a job that requires everyoneÃ¢??s assistance. So please, any time you see a hurricane coming your way, take a couple of days off and drive away. And for you boaters, always carry a lifejacket, flares/light, means of communication, and leave behind a trip plan or schedule with a LOVE ONE. I capitalize Ã¢??love oneÃ¢?Â, since you want that person to place a report on you if for some reason you do not get back. Also, it is a good idea to have your boat inspected by the Coast Guard, it is free.
