This one is for Ron. Early Luger, 85-90% cond. with excellent bore. Has relieved frame and U notched sight. No P release, no import mark, not arsenal refinished.

If you feel like removing the pin and checking, take a look at the back of the safety lever. There should be a "58" scratched into it, only the first 600 or so Swiss Military have it.

I'm a little surprised that, assuming the gun started out with an unrelieved frame, that the right grip does not appear to have a "3" over the "58" that would have been added at the time the frame was relieved. I would add a link to a couple of guns noted as such but the other Luger forum is down at the moment.

Hi Mark,
This is the first time I hear of this... It prompted me to look at mine, #519... 5 above 19 on the right grip.
It also started out unrelieved and is now relieved.

You might have forgotten, but we discussed it on this thread, so I've seen that picture before.

My theory (with only two examples) was that they added the 3rd digit to track the grip when the groove for the thicker magazine button needed to be cut. I'd sure like to see more examples if possible.

Would it be reasonable to assume that the frame relief & U notch could be done by the owner or local smith rather than send it off to an arsenal to be modified. Seems like a simple task for the skilled Swiss. This might explain the lack of a third # stamped into the right grip. Would also explain the lack of an arsenal refinish.
