What do I have

I inherited a Luger and I like to know what model it is.

Here is a list of the markings that I found.

1. On the top of the barrel is stamped 1939.

2. A little further back where you normally find the Manufacturer's Trademark (like Spandau) is the markings S/42

3. On the left-hand side of the barrel is the number 6311 and 11 stamped on a couple of places.

4. On the right hand side of the barrel appears to Mauser military proofs for S/42 or 42 or BYF coded Lugers but only the first two stamps of stylized eagles match. The last stamp is almost like a Krieghoff proof that is like a stick drawn eagle (it looks like). Can anybody help me?

Take a look in the "Technical Information" Section of the Forum (located to the left) and click on the Proof Marks. This will give you a picture of the proofs stamped on your pistols and let you know what proof you have.

There is a lot of good info in the Techinical Information and the General Information sections.

Hi,

You have a WW2 Luger made by Mauser. It was made in 1939, and the code for Mauser was S/42. The serial number is found on the frame under the barrel and has a letter suffix with it also, so should read 6311 N,O,P, or Q most likely. The first two marks on the right side are army acceptance marks of Eagle 63, Eagle 63, and the third marking is the test proof, which is also found on the right side of the barrel and the left side of the breech block. All Mauser Military models had acceptance marks and test marks, but they were different eagles and numbers depending on the date of manufacture.

and the background photo is of a 1939 Mauser banner model
