Mahogany wood, cast stock iron, holes terribly misplaced, no cartouche..on and on.
Seller says it's original..

Darius..everything is wrong with it! Take a close look at an original Imperial Artillery stock and the differences will be striking!

Darius.Original German Artillery and Navy Stocks were made of a European walnut. You need to know what it looks like.
The iron is cast. Originals were machined. Subtle differences but it's all in the details you need to recognize.
Hole placement..Original German stocks had 4 holes placed correctly for the top closure and attachment stock strap. Anytime you see them placed as funky as these are you know something isn't right.
The shape of the wood..this wood is incorrectly shaped. Subtle but you can see it. There are a half dozen other little tells but once you get a good look at an original stock in your hands..they will pop out like a herpes sore on your date.

Alanint is basically right, I agree, also here in Italy many people tend to be a bit superficial and don't research enough about what they are trying to purchase.

Adding to Jerry's points, on this example, they drilled the four holes where they roughly thought they should go, but then neglected to add the single hole that holds the leather strap at the stock wrist!! There is no evidence that any leather was held snug to the wood at this point, nor any indentations, which the metal washers would have left.

Looks like it was secretly made by inmates with wood rasps and sandpaper, nails and a hammer... definitely not original... even the Pakistani reproduction gun trade products look better by comparison...

Thanks Jerry ... I'll try to get further details , it was difficult to find color pictures of period made stocks. . Your suggestions will help me key in on some of the basics..

Jerry, I would have thought that there should be an archive of good photos of many different parts. But they aren't easy to find. So to start things off, I am going to open a thread in the Artillery Forum... just for photos of Artillery Stocks... Let's see how long it takes to get a good library of photos for this accessory...
