Default Luger Box

Several years ago, I was given a cardboard box which had contained a Luger. This box was a product from some importer/distributor to enclose the pistol. Does anyone remember who this importer may have been? I have attached a photo of the box and I hope someone can help.

Wasn't Stoeger the only official prewar importer of Lugers?

Default Luger Box

Probably not Stoeger.

Stoeger had copyrights on the name/word LUGER and that is most likely why the importer totally avoided that word on his box?

I don't know how accurate this was, but I was told that the box might have been from Montgomery Ward prior to the Gun law changes in 1968. I have suspected that it may be them or some other major distibutor. I am hoping one of the older Luger collectors may remember this box.

Thanks Guys,

Marvin

Marvin,

I remember some of the recent imports coming in boxes like this 4-5 years ago. As to the importer, I can't help you there. But I am willing to bet it is the same one that was

importing some of the Argentine contract FN Hi-Powers. Some of those came in a similar box. They were marked FN Hi-Power

with a picture of the pistol.

Regards,

SteveM

Default Luger Importer trivia

Folks,

Lest we get to sorting fly feces from pepper, prior to World War I, Mr Hans Tauscher was the exclusive distributor of Luger pistols to North America and South America. Tauscher had exclusive distributorship for the Americas that covered all DWM products. He was present and assisted during the Army test trials.

Firms such as Stoeger, Abercrombie and Fitch, Pacific Arms, von Lendkerke and detmold, etc could IMPORT, but the transaction had to go through Herr Tauscher, as he was the DWM representative and received a commission for each order.

Tauscher was a very flamboyant character, was married to a much younger woman stage star and generally "lived large".

He was interned during world War I as a suspected spy and lost his business, or at least the Luger/DWM portion as a result.

After the war, he was back in business in New York until 1938, at which time, he sold the business and returned to Germany, some think at the call of the Abwehr. From that point onwards, there are no records of which I am aware, that identify the ultimate fate of herr Tauscher.

I am very pleased to have among my Luger ephemera a number of Tauscher items, catalogues, flyers, mail circulars and at one time I owned the sign that was posted in his office window.

An interesting guy!

Just some trivia.
