It's an attempt at humor. I am an Imperial Era collector. Prior to 1918, there were only two manufacturers of Lugers, DWM (original) and Erfurt (government arsenal under patent license to manufacture Lugers beginning 1910). After that time DWM ceased to exist (it became BKIW) and Lugers were no longer made by the original makers...hence "reproductions".

Actually........
Hi Ron, right idea, but just a slight adjustment needs to be made to your post 1918 phrase... It is actually a replica if made after 1918... a reproduction can only be truly re-made by DWM, or Erfurt, Orrrrrrrrrrrrr, the direct (as in original family name?? ) decendants of the original factory owners at the time of initial production?.... ...What that really means.. no matter how good I get, I will only ever be able to make replica parts!!....... Best to you Ron, as always, til...lat'r...GT... Actually, that might even make Erfurt a replica???

I also have found that subtle attempts at humor often go unappreciated...I blame the anonymity of the Internet and [up to now] inability to view the speaker, to gauge his expression, to hear the tone of his voice...Emoticons just don't do justice to face-to-face emotional expression...

G.T.
Reproduce: vt: to produce again…to cause to exist again or anew…to imitate closely…to make a representation (as an image or copy) of. I stand firmly by my assertion, Sir! (Which is my prerogative as a stubborn old goat )

...and I thought that the trial runs lasted until 1973, when Mauser finally stopped bumming around and produced a decent version
