Default Mauser 1939 Code 42 Strange Proof Mark

I have a 1939 "S" block two digit ser no with a strange proof mark on the trigger guard just above the scripted "s". The proof mark appears to be a serifed X in a circle. Can anyone please shed some light on this marking. Thanks in advance to those who respond. Picture is attached.

same thing is on my 1936 Mauser....it's a East German rework mark, meaning it was rebuilt in the 1950's in the DDR, I'd bet it has a unnumbered barrel with a crown over N stamp on it?

Nukem556,

Thanks for the reply. I suspected that was the case. Surprisingly though it has its original barrel and a matching fxo magazine. Again thanks for the information

When the DDR rebuilt PO8s they usually added 2 matching mags, most marked on side 2/1001 rather than E/37, but some WW2 mags were recycled. TH

My particular pistol appears to have the original barrel with two digit ser. no and land diameter stamped on bottom. Barrel while not pristine is pretty decent. Unfortunately grips are wooden replacements the gun came with one magazine that is marked fxo and PO8
