Is it possible to re-point a pair of black plastic grips? I have a set that sure could use it.

Also, anyone have any recommendations as to how to make the worn "black" go back to a solid "Black" again? This is for a shooter - not a collectors piece - so any thoughts would be appreciated...

John,

I am not sure which type plastic grips you have, but I have a suggestion for for. The best way to paint the grips will be to use Testor's Model Paint. To get a perfect finish, you need to have a modeller who has one of the small paint sprayers for models. With this spray technique, you will get a perfect finish which will wear well, but the paint will eventually wear off if they are used much. Good luck on finding the spray gun!'

I think I have one of those airbrushes in storage - it is a "Pasche" or spelled something like that (spelling names is NOT my forte - as Ted pointed out) It also has a baby compressor of some sort (I bought these "new" at a yard sale unused for about $15 years ago - they are still "un-used"!!!)

The grips are original WW2 Black plastic - but are very, very worn. In the wear areas, there is an off-white/grey hue to them - not sure why, actually??

You sound like you are all set to "spiff" up the grips. I have never used the little airbrush, but from what I have seen, they will give you a perfect finish. I am not sure which paint to use, but Testors does have the flat black and shiney black. You may want to get the two and experiment with them to get the correct look. Good Luck and let us know how it works out; this will be interesting to know.

Thanks again..! I'll take some pictures of the "before" and "after".. As for the paint - I'd probably opt for a flat or "satin black" - and if they don't have a "satin", I may be able to come up at the proper mix with glossy and flat...

Anyway - now I have another reason to go to the storage facility and find that air-brush.!!:-)

Hugh, If you have grayish white below your black plastic grips, are they marked "Franzite" or "Sportarms Chicago" inside. I don't ever recall this on original Black Widow grips. I've heard that a black magic marker will also work, if you don't mind joining the "black hand" brotherhood.

I have seen some types of black plastic turn a "whitish" or "grayish" color when exposed to certain chemicals. Very often this is just on the surface and can be buffed back to the original black. I would try a little 600 wet or dry sandpaper on them before resorting to painting. I have not tried checking black widow grips but if you want to send them to me, I will give it a try. I have some carbide checking tools that should cut that plastic with no problem. If you decide to do this, PLEASE DO NOT PAINT before sending them.

The "whitish" areas you describe are exactly what mine have...!!! I'd prefer to send them to you and have you give them a go before painting (as I have a couple of weeks before I can get to the storage area to try and find the airbrush). Frankly, if they don't clean up for you - at least we gave it a try..! Please e-mail me off-line with you mailing address and how much I should put a check in for....!!

Hugh came up with the best idea yet! By all means let him try before painting the grips. I feel that once they are painted, the solvent in the paint may damage the plastic if it ever wears off. Good Luck on these Hugh, man, what a great amount of knowledge this group has!

I absolutely agree with you - so I'm sending them out to Hugh next Monday.. I figure if anyone can work "their magic" on grips - it would definately be Hugh!!! I'll take some "before" pics and keep them as a reference...

You made another point I hadn't thought of either - and that is how the paint may possibly react to the grip material..????

Epoxy is one of those "forever" things unless you use "not any more" solvent on them...
