Brass catcher

My 30 caliber Luger spits out the ejected brass like a shot from a cannon! They easily go over my right shoulder and about 20 foot and lay in a space of 10 foot diameter. What would be a good brass catcher? I usually loose 10% of my brass in grass, weeds and river rock. Plus having to pick up brass around other shooters feet is not always possible.

Large fish net on a stand, fine enough to catch minnows, and with some kind of 'spreader' to keep it deployed.

I use an Xmas tree stand to hold it up.

I have gotten lazy and allow my brass to fall - however, it is a private range in my backyard.
I never used one, but they had one for the M16 for left handers, as the brass flew by their face.
I would think that something like that could work, but not sure.
Sheepherders suggestion is likely the best.

Best solution is a standard tarp spread out on the ground.

I love Ed's idea of a private range in my backyard ... unfortunately its not allowed here even if your miles from your nearest neighbor.
I like Georges idea the 2nd best as you kinda have an approximate idea of where your shells will end up.
sheepherder's idea seems kinda fishy to me

Spreading a tarp to cover that area could work as long as it doesn't interfere with other shooters.

Brass is relatively cheap for me. I have so much of it I don't bother to pick it up. At my private range beside the leather shop I hope to leave enough brass so it looks/acts like gravel.

But yes, I would go with the tarp idea if I wanted to catch it. Even then you might lose some small %.

My minnow-net was for indoor bench shell catching. Our range is small and shells bounce all over. I do [rarely] use it outdoors at a covered bench.

The tarp is a good idea if you know where it's ejecting.

And I love baked Alaskan Cod. With potato salad. And Pepsi.

Lugers tend to throw brass fairly vertically if you hold the gun straight.

A large bright color fiberglass reinforced vinyl tarp will help make it visible. Think orange.

Some use a nut roller to pick it up more quickly. Something like this:

I think I've mentioned it in another thread, but my Luger and Mauser cases have ended up on top of fluorescent light fixtures in our indoor basement range. Range maintenance guys who find those airborne shell cases know they're mine because I'm the only one shooting bottleneck cartridges...

I have been using one of these for many years now. They work great at my indoor range that is carpeted. Sure saves the old back!!!

Greg, yes..BUT most Luger's eject straight up! Throwing the spent cartridge up and behind you. These I could certainly use for my Turkish Kanik though!

No apology necessary; that's probably where I got the idea from. I don't get their catalog but I do get Natchez and Cabela's. I'm sure they have something similar.
