Default po8 Red 9 Grips

Hi
I Have a 1920 artillary All Matching, Serial Number 56xxP With Red 9 Grips, Number On Grips Do Not Match Rest Of Gun. My Question Is ,The Mag. That Came With it Originally Would That Have The Serial Number Of Gun On It Or, One With No Number. What Would Be Correct Grips For This Gun?
Thanks Alex

Red nine grips are fine and, in fact, more desireable if they matched. Original magazine would be numbered to the pistol, but almost any wood based nickle mag is correct. Pitchers would help.

Does anyone know how many of the Red Nine Lugers were issued?

I just came across one on Gunbroker the other day and thougth it was a fake because I had never seen a Luger marked that way before.

Muffin1,
is your artillery chamber dated 1920, double dated along with another WW1 date or is the chamber not dated at all? Are there military proof marks on the right hand side of the receiver? What does the bore look like? Pictures would help. Especially of the serial numbers on the bottom of the barrel. Does the bluing and strawing look original or has it been restored? Is there some sort of eagle off to the side of the serial number under the barrel? Are there multiple serial numbers on the real sight and do they match? Lotsa questions, but as George said, pictures would help.

Pat et al, To the best of my knowledge after 50 years of dealing with lugers and having read most of the books, is that Red Nine grip marked lugers were a mistake made by a few field armours. The first 61K 9mmP Mauser brooms made by Mauser in 1916 come from the factory with the standard unmarked grips. Since some troops were attempting to use the previous 7.63mm Mauser ammo in them, a directive was issued that the Factory would beginning marking the grips with the big "Red Nine" and that field armours would marked those already issued as best they could. So, aledgedly, some armours went nuts and marked any pistol in 9mmP with a long barrel with there stamp or pocket knife. I would guesstimate, that there are now hundreds more "Red NIne" marked LPO8s, than were actually marked during WW1. So just be aware, most a phony. TH
