Post Navy repro rig value?

I have been offered a complete Navy reproduction stock/rig for $500. The leather is reddish-brown, the stock has the brass disc insert, quality looks good from table-distance, but I haven't examined it closely. I don't know who might have made it.

I have no experience with this sort of thing, have never seen a price for anything comparable. Is this a reasonable price for such an item? Is it totally out of range, a real rip?

I would rather have an original, of course, but something like this may have to do in the interim$$$...

Dwight, A lot depends on the quality of the rig. If you can see it in person you may want to try fitting the pistol into it. Fit the pistol to the stock. Make sure it all goes together as you should expect. Then check for the accuracy of the smaller details. Does the pull-up strap knot look as it should? Are the ears of the tool rod pouch the correct diameter and thickness? See if a loading tool will fit in the pouch. Check to see it is positioned correctly. Look at the stock block to see if it is in the right place and fits the stock and straps. Look at the stitching to see if it is cotton or linen, should be linen. The metal studs for closures should be hammered on. Just take a really critical look at this if you are going to spend that kind of money on it. I have seen quite a few repro Artillery and Navy rigs that I would not have for any price. Many would not hold a pistol as they were too small. A repro Navy stock just sold on Ebay. Or is still on auction, I forget. Use that as some sort of reference. Good Luck! Jerry Burney

Jerry,

Thanks for your wise counsel. I still question the price (I haven't found a Navy stock or rig, ebay or anywhere, to compare)--even if a rig meets the quality criteria, is it worth this much money? Or is it overpriced?

Dwight, They are scarce but they do show up. Patience is a virtue in the quest for Luger stuff.

Hard to say about the price. One would have to take a close look at the quality, fit and finish to determine if that is what you want to pay. That's a call we all have to make everytime we bump into something that strikes our fancy. Good Luck! Jerry Burney

Grab hold of a couple of copies of Shotgun News or Gun List, both will show offerings of repro Navy and LP08 rigs at a considerable savings to $500.
