Although all 9mm rounds are the same caliber, the overall length will vary from round to round, depending on bullet weight, configuration and manufacturer. While most magazines compensate for this, the tension present in the drum mags may be pushing the longer rounds up against the magazine wall, causing some drag.

You may want to lubricate the magazine a bit before use. It helps things move along.

The shorter over all length cartridges should load easier... and some brands may not tolerate the use of the loader or trommelmagazine at all.
... and Eric... don't be so hard on yourself...you can't be an idiot... you are a LUGER ENTHUSIAST and COLLECTOR for goodness sakes! ...It takes more than a big wallet and good luck to be a good one... You have the good sense to seek out the best advice available before spending your money... You are no rookie at this either... you have a very enviable collection of fine historical artifacts anyone would be proud to own.
