Chime in if I'm wrong, but shouldn't that be an "S/42" instead of a "42" code for a 1939 variant? Cool picture of the toes, by the way.

9311 is unusually nice, very little bluing wear and no damage or signs of hi jinx that I can see. Do the internals and the magazine match, and does it include a holster, etc? (For both guns).
Closeups of the front and rear grip straps, side plates, etc, can help us evaluate condition too. Just a real W. A.G. would be around $2k on either one, but again we really need more info, better photos, etc. But they are both very nice guns. dju |

natural order of things for all of us -
I once asked a newer member at the time, oh what does "Para Belllum" mean - I mean - was I being stupid that night? Hopefully intoxicated, but likely just --- off I agree with the above - a 1939 S/42 is worth just a bit less than a byf in my opinion. $1700-$2000 - depending on if all matching - if the 1939 has a matching magazine, then add a couple hundred (easy), byf lugers have bakelite bases and so technically easily 'matched'... Nice Lugers. The "9311u" Luger should have the number "93" or "94" stamped inside the side plate.
The "353" Luger should have the single number "3" or "4" or no number stamped inside the side plate. IIRC, the "u" and "v" block was generally reserved at Mauser for commercial contract guns. This is a military accepted pistol in that block. Perhaps the earlier time(s) they ran through the block, they used them for military contracts? In order to confirm retail prices for these guns, look at the larger and more reliable online sales sites. Simpson Ltd, Checkpoint Charlies, Legacy Collectibles are a few. The retail pricing should be about 30% higher than direct collector pricing, and represents an insurance replacement value. High condition Mauser Lugers that are all matching and collectible are in the prices you've been quoted here. As Ed mentioned you can turn the "42" date Luger into a "matching" magazine one with an original "fxo" milled magazine with black plastic base. These cost more than similar magazines because people know that. You'll probably enjoy the FAQ document we maintain for free distribution at this site. Just follow the links starting with the "FAQ" link at the top of every forum page. Welcome to the forum! Marc
