1910 DWM: what do you guys think?

Hi everyone,

I recently acquired this 1910 DWM and I would like to get your thoughts on it.

It is all matching (I took it apart).
There is pitting on:
-trigger guard (front)
-right hand side just in front of the acceptance stamps.
The are a couple of cuts in the metal on the front strap.

But, on the bright side the straw is very strong and the blue on most of the pistol is strong. I am not good at percentages.

The magazine is a commercial one I think, but the seller says he will get me a nice, proper 1910 magazine.

Maybe it's me but that sideplate looks strange. Is it numbered on the bottom? Bill

I'v posted a few more pics of the side plate with different camera angles.

I did do a thorough cleaning of the gun inside and out right after I got it.
In the pitted areas, I put drops of Hoppe's solvent let it set for a few minuets and then used qtips to and cotton cloth to wipe the area until the cloth had no brown-red smudges.

After cleaning I put a medium to heavy coat of Hoppes 9 and Rem Oil and then let it sit for a day then wiped the excess off.

Keep those opinions coming as from them I am learning...

Is there a feeling that this is NOT an honest gun but maybe a marriage?

Hi Richard, Assuming the side plate has a matching number on it's lower edge, like in the photo, I would say that this gun is all original, with the exception of the magazine. If it weren't for the pitting, I would rate the finish as excellent.

Norme, thanks for posting the picture of what to look for...

Wlyon and Norme, I checked the 1910 side plate and it has the last two digits of the serial on the bottom as well as on the bottom of the take-down lever.

The picture below shows the bottom of the release level and the side plate.

Gosh, I had taken the thing apart and cleaned it very carefully and never noticed the bottoms of take-down lever or the side plate as being marked.

I love this place...I always learn something new.

Richard,

Your gun looks bona fide to me. Since you can see rust in the pits it does not look redone. Looks like it may have been used little but was improperly stored - it's a shame about the pitting.

Will you be trading the commercial mag or keeping it? I ask because I am looking for one for a long time and would be interested in it if it was availiable.

If you have a 1910 proper magazine, then we can do a trade...let me know.
Otherwise, when the seller comes up with one, I am sure he will want the commercial back.

About the pitting, you are dead on. It is a real shame that one in the chain of previous owners did not give the respect that this luger deserves: what a shame.

Personally, I could live with that amount of pitting easily. It's not a deal breaker and I find your pistol a good representative of the early military Lugers. When I see such "issues" I try to remember that these pistols were not meant as drawer queens, but were issued to frontline soldiers and were carried in muddy trenches a century ago. Kind of scars...
