Colt 1911A1?
Hello everyone,
I have now been offered an 1911A1? .45 for $400.00. The gun has a Reminginton Rand slide, but frame is a colt. The barrel is very clean and the gun is tight with a very good pakerizing all over. It looks like a WWII style gun(setup and all) and I was told that it is not a matching, but is his personal carry gun(he really does not wish to sale it, but he needs some cash). He told me was built in the Fifties. Anyone know what I should look for? Is it a good price? It looks good to me, but what do I know. Thank you Michael

I bought...Yea! John may I ask something else?
The same person has a .45 frame complete for an 1911 made by Silvercup and would like to sell it to. What do you think it is worth? He said it would fit the Remington Rand slide well or most any 1911 slides. Thanks Michael

Well MG, I too am looking for a frame like that, <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />
I have a Remington Rand slide and most of the parts needed to build up a 1911A1, But, I don't know what they are worth by themselves... $100 to $150 maybe? Ed

Hello again,
I was wondering if there is anyone who would know what type of grips would be on the 1911A1 that I bought.(See post) It has plastic(?)brownish or chocolate brown color ones now(odd color. Is this right for an WWII or maybe Korea era gun? Who would I buy from if not? No markings on grips that I can see, but clean with no damage. Also, should chamber on the barrel have pakerizing it(Front end has a some left on it)? If so who would do this work? Is there someone in Dallas maybe? Should I leave it alone? Thank you Michael

Michael, I am no expert on this matter, but the wood grips were used for WW1, and then replacements were the brown plastic and is what we had on our 45's when they were replaced in the late 1980's.
My 1911 book says; Colt arms; walnut stocks gradually phased out by roughly 730000, plastic stocks introduced April 1940, widespread use began in March 1941. Keyes Fibre Co., used on Ithaca, Rand, and Union Switch, were strictly the plastic ones. There are several styles of plastic stocks and I quote "...all stocks were about the same semi-gloss drab brown color. The shade varied slightly with each vat mixture and contractor." The book is a good one called Collectors Guide to Colt 45 Service Pistols, by Charles Clawson. Ed

Thank you Mr. Tinker,
This sounds like what is on the colt now and I think the person I bought from was trying to make a WWII era setup with the Rand slide.(I just love old guns). Will the Lugerdoc have any proper era clips do you think? I will look to see if I can find the book here in town to add to my collection. Now it's on to buying more Lugers (trying for an Artillery this time) maybe a shooter or maybe, just maybe, a collectable grade. Michael

Michael (and it's Ed), the magazines can be found on e-bay. Since we used the 1911A1 for over 70+ years, the magazines are all over the place and also of different eras.
Here are pictures of what WW2 magazines look like, again info from Clawson:
