I'm again off topic but I just came across a very nice Broomhandle I'm trying to ID. Serial in the 30xxx range, cal 9mm, 5.5 in bbl, 24 grooves walnut grips, deep blue finish, Mauser Obendorf chamber & right rear frame inscription, 50-500 yds rear sight. Which model is it? I would gladly seek help on this as I'm no expert in those and it's a very nice piece.... Thanks kidvett <img src="graemlins/offtopic.gif" border="0" alt="[offtopic]" /> |

Hi kidvett!
Based on the limited information at hand, it sounds most like a Great War Imperial Contract Red Nine variation. Try comparing it to the pistol pictured here: http://meltingpot.fortunecity.com/utah/894/red9.htm If it is identical in characteristics and markings (save serial number) then itâ??s a â??Red Nineâ?. If it isnâ??t identical, note the differences and come back :-) Warm regards, Kyrie |

Some of the "Red 9" contract C-96's were stamped with the Imperial eagle on the front of the magazine. The original grips were as you indicate; 24 groove. Most, but not all, had the "9" carved in the grip and filled in with red paint. The serial number places it in the 1 - 150,000 range of the Red-9 which had it's own serial number block. The 5.5 inch barrel is correct and the sight distances are proper. The right side of the chamber should have a German military acceptance stamp. The finish on these guns was not up to normal Mauser standards and there were lots of tool marks, poor polishing and often the grips didn't fit particularly well.
The source for my information is the book "System Mauser" by Breathed and Schroeder. Another possibility is that it's chambered for the longer cased 9mm Mauser Export cartridge. A 9mm Luger cartridge should recess into the chamber much too far if it's the export chambering. It's a rare chambering and cartridges haven't been made for it in years. But, it may be possible to load for it so don't dismiss it if that's what it turns out to be. Besides, it's worth more on the collector's market than a standard 9mm. |

It’s actually 50 to 500 meters, not yards. The Mauser R713 Schnellfeuer-Pistole, the selective fire version of the C96, actually has the tangent leaf sight go out to an absurd 1000 meters. 1000 meters? Ummmm, yeah.

Thanks for the info,
Kyrie, I took a look at the pistol you indicated and I have to say it is very similar, but no red 9 carved in the grips. I'll go have a second look to verify that Imperial Army acceptance stamp on the right side of the chamber. Also I dont remember seeing the Eagle in front of the magazine. I'll see and get the info. It also has a wooden stock ( mismatched but seems correct ). I've wanted a Broomhandle for a long time and this opportunity takes me completely by surprise! ( I guess I should always have a $3000 laying aside for opportunities like this!...but that would be getting into something else...) I'm supposed to be collecting LUGERS & P-38 ONLY! BUT I do have a soft spot for nice firearms... Any idea on the value of this piece? It's about 90% blue, dark bore with good rifling... kidvett |

Sights on long barreled Lugers and Mausers going out to 500 or 1000 meters are not as crazy as they sound. The idea was to shoot at the other guy's position while clearing or reloading the machine gun etc. You cant't expect to hit much but on the other hand it encourages the other guy to keep his head down and not make trouble. So the expected accuracy was just to put it in the area of the other guy's trenches.

The US tried the same idea with a different approach with the Petersen device. It was .30 caliber semi auto in the pistol cartridge group. Object was volume more than accuracy.
