Post Magazine Bottom Movement...?

Have a wooden bottomed magazine (swiss type with metal insert) that has about 1/8" of movement of the wooden part, opposite the side of the tube where the pin is located. There are no cracks in the wood and the bottom/tube/pin look original.

Any sugestions to prevent this movement and to snug-up the wooden bottom ?

Appreciate your help...

Perhaps GT could shim it up for you. I've also seen plenty of mags where the owner peened the bottom front of the tube or added an additional pin in front, to prevent this movement caused by wood shrinkage, but I would not recomment these measures on a rare early swiss mag. Tom H.

Hi to all! The very best solution to this problem of a loose fitting mag bottom was shown to me by my friend Bob Pultz, he used a piece (shim) of brass cut from a cartridge of the correct radius, and inserted it in the front spine area of the mag. bottom! Tightened it right up! And, it looked great! I'll find out the caliber of the case and post it! It's the best fix I've seen yet!! till...later...G.T. <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

Great post GT. That may cure a bunch of difficulties. I certainly hope this cures Pete's "BM" problems! Pun intended!!

Hello All,

Thanks for your help...I will pick up some .40 ammo casings and will try GT's method...

This magazine is a really nice 1900/1906 swiss metal insert type in otherwise excellent condition. My first thought was some "liquid nails" adhesive, but that did not settle well the more I thought about it...

I have achieved the same result on 3 magazines by inserting a small hardwood (maple) shim and pressing it in between the wood bottom and the curved metal tube . . . out of sight. Works well for me and is a quick fix.
