Default Barrel/sight protector

All I have seen on this is what Costanzo wrote in WOL. Is it just another third party trinket or were they actually practical. I don't like it because it sometimes comes off in a holster. Never really thought the sight needed any protecting--at least what this would offer.

Information, comments would be appreciated.

I can't comment on how practical they were, but they were in common use by the Swiss on their Lugers. I guess it is a reflection of the care the Swiss exercised in the maintenance of their weapons. I am sure they never were left in place when the gun was carried in a holster as 1) it does not fit, particularly in the skinny Swiss holsters, and 2) I suspect the device was intended more for rack storage than carry. It is not so much for sight protection as it is to help maintain the bore cleanliness.

Ron, I never thought of the those skinny Swiss holsters, your absolutely right, would never work. I guess Sam's observation of it being a sight protector is not a calculated function for it. but keeping the bore clean sounds very reasonable.

Thanks
