Hi Rick,

Don't worry about stupid questions, my friend - worry about stupid answers. Over the years I've heard many more stupid answers than I've heard stupid questions

But to answer your question, "too hot" just means excessive chamber pressure. That can be due to too heavy a propellant charge, a bullet too heavy for a proper propellant charge, a bullet too large for the bore, an incorrect propellant and a host of other things. But the basic concern is excessive chamber pressure.

Thanks Kyrie,

When you buy ammunition, is there some indication of the charge in the cartridge? All I see is the bullet weight in grains indicated on the box. I have been shooting some Russian military ammo with 124 gr. fmj. I have also bought some Lellier & Bellot 115 gr. fmj that seems to be pretty good quality ammo.

was direct and to the point. I never would have bothered to ask.In my ignorance of the mechanics of

I shoot the Artillery Luger that I have showing in the

owners corner "MIKE" with and without the Sarco stock

and holster.

Before I started shooting it I installed some replacement

parts and set aside the originals for the "possible" day I needed to sell the gun.

I replaced the firing pin with the later style with the relief grooves, put a chunk of rubber from an O-ring in the

firing pin spring to act as a buffer, installed a replacement firing pin retainer and glued a chunk of rubber

on that as a further buffer.

I fire handloads ONLY in the pistol, 124gr lead bullet

with 4.7gr of Unique. This load will not lock the action open hand held, but will lock the action open all the time

with the stock attached. I've gotten some 1" 25 yard groups

with this combination WITHOUT the stock!

This load works well in all my other 9mm pistols as well.

I always use CORBON ++P 9mm hollow points in my Luger when I am at the range for hours at a time.

okay, just kidding. !! don't do that.

The Sellot & Belliot 9mm works great, and is excellent made ammo. Some report that the South African commercial 9mm works well too. PMP that is. I've used it in other guns, but not the Luger. Works well too! and cheap.

www.aimsurplus.com sells the S&B 9mm very cheap! check it out.

I think it's like $110 per case of 1000 rounds. I bought one of these a couple months ago, and have been very pleased. the shipping was about $12 or so to Georgia here.

No sir, there is not - with one exception. This exception is ammunition that is "+P" or "+P+". A label of "+P" indicates the ammunition is capable of producing pressures in excess of normally allowed pressures, and the ammunition may produce excessive wear or be damaging to any firearm in which it is used. Not all cartridges have a "+P" standard, and in cartridges that lack a "+P" standard the "+P" marking simply means the ammunition is potentially dangerous to fire.

"+P+" has no technical definition, and usually means the ammunition so tagged is capable of reaching pressures in excess of those produced by "+P" ammunition.

The one exception to all of this is .38 Super ACP. The .38 Super has *only* a "+P" standard. There is no non-+P load. The reasons for this are a little complicated and obscure, and I won't get into it unless there is some interest - it's not really related to Lugers

Kyrie is 100% right on in the first statement about standard ammo (non +p) If your weapon doesnt function with that there is a problem with it mechanically. I think the influx of lots of mismatched part Lugers and Lugers that have had an improper barrel change (torquing the reciever forks out of alignment with the frame and twisting the breech track into a slight spiral have started this myth about hot ammo being the way to go. It isn't. Ted

I use the PMP in my Luger, works very well. I had problems with the S&B. S&B loads the 9mm a little hotter, around 100 fps faster than most American commercial loads, at least for the 115 gr.
