Looking at a 1916 DWM with a Unit Marking of 57.R.1 Thoughts? |

Nice looking Luger. The unit mark means: Infanterie Regiment Herzog Ferdinand von Braunschweig (8. Westfälisches) Nr. 57, 1. Kompagnie. Station was Wesel.
It is the first one I see with this unit mark and it is of interest for me, because I live near Wesel. Unusual is that the unit mark is missing the number of the Luger in the company. There are only a few 1916 dated Lugers with unit mark. It was part of the VII. Army Corps during the Great War. I have an altered Reichsrevolver holster with a unit stamp of this regiment. 31.R. means Infanterie Regiment Graf Bose (1. Thüringisches) Nr. 31; station was Altona.
A unit mark without a number of a company and a weapon number makes no sense and are not according the stamping order from 1909. I have some comments about the reasons for missing the company and the weapon number but these would need a lot of work to declare it and would bring me to the border of my English knowledge. Best regards from Germany |
