Went out again today, took five boxes of different 9mm loads and three pistols. Until very recently I sort of viewed ammo like regular gas, get a decent brand and it would be ok, any 9mm 115 g would work, and to some degree it did. My 1918 Erfurt is a completely different gun with 125g lead roundnose & 5.3g of Unique. (I had replaced the spring with a lighter one). I was running seven shots as fast as I could drop the barrel back down and pull. I shot 124 fmj with 5.9g Unique in my P1 and Mauser HP. The P1 with the alloy frame did better with 115g but the Mauser HP is heavier and was flawless wth the 124g
fmj. With the Luger I'm very careful with case and overall length, really makes a difference. No jams, great accuracy, lot of fun to shoot. Just ordered 1000 124g fmj, 500 .45 bullets (185g swc)and a set of .45 dies.

RK,

You may or may not have feeding difficulties with the .45 185 gr swc bullets. Not all 1911s feed every bullet well. The older GI guns are quite reliable with 230 gr. roundnose bullets but can be troublesome with swc bullets. Newer guns are generally throated for better (but not absolute) reliability with swc bullets.

Over 25 years ago I settled on hard cast 230 gr. roundnose lead bullets and 4.6 grains of bullseye using a taper crimping die. These reloads are absolutely reliable in my old and new guns. This load is just about equivalent to commercial hardball in power and very accurate in a good tight gun.

RK, what AGE has said is spot on. Not all .45's will feed SWC bullets reliably. Should they prove to be a problem in your pistol, any decent gunsmith should be able to polish your ramp and throat your barrel for reliable feeding. My normal practice ammo is the 200 grain RCBS SWC which is similar to the H&G #68 mold. With 5.6 grains of WW-231, it's accurate and completely reliable.

A load that was 100% in my E. German rework Luger yesterday was 115 gr. FMJ and 5.3 grains of WW-231. I loaded them to an AOCL of 1.110".

Thanks guys, but I probably won't shoot them much in my 1911A1. If I have anything that would come close by the most lenient standards to a collector, it would be my Remington. Its close to 95%. But I do have a Webley MKVI that is a lot of fun to shoot.

The .38 S&W factory ammo is very weak. This would definitely be a reloading project. The factory ammo shoots six-eight inches above point of aim. Doesn't have the feel at all of the MKVI. Seems very close to a .380. I think I'll get a set of dies for that too when they show up on ebay.

An interesting story told to me by a British Veteran of WW2 involved the .38 S&W. He was in a communications section during the war, serving in England, North Africa and Italy. He was a dispatch rider as well as pulling various guard duties. He was offered a revolver chambered in .38 S&W and adamently refused to take it. The ammunition was so limited that it was rationed and even if fired in combat, every round had to be accounted for... in writing!

There was no such problem with .45 ACP cartridges and he could draw all he wanted without question so he opted for a Thompson Sub-Machinegun and later struck a deal with a "Yank" for a 1911A1. He carried both throughout the war and when I knew him in the mid-1980's, he still had the 1911A1 which I fired on several occassions.

Rick; I have about 25 7.65mm German pistols that I load for. I use 2.5 gr of Win. 231. They are Sauer 38h, HSC, PPK, PP, Pistol model 27, and Pistol model 37. I use Hornady 60 gr xtp seated to an oal of 1.920, and they feed like butter!!
Have you tried this load?

Rick; I have a correction!! oal of 32 ACP should be .920. Maybe to many Pabst Blue Ribbon after golf.
