Yet another interesting book
First, here is the link to the book "Japanese Intelligence in WWII". English, very readable.
The book itself has its context and background. But putting that aside, I noticed gun collecting process actually has something in common as the intelligence or counter-intelligence actitivies as described by the author. Unbelievable? Two examples excerpted here: Page 41, most of information we collected was fragmentary... it came to be a serious matter how we should digest such information. .... in a situation without decisive information, the only possible way is to rely on fragmentary information buried in open sources, assembling these pieces of information patiently. Then once new information is obtained, it must be compared with the half-done puzzle of information to check the unity The above was not regarding C&R collecting. Section topic was "HUMINT Activities Against The Soviet Union" Page 60 has an interesting example of identifying fake: in September 1940, the Military Police arrested the Soviet spy Wang Yuan who disguised himself as a Japanese officer.... Although Wang wore an IJA uniform with the rank indicators for a lieutenant, the scabbard of his sword was not genuine and he confused the equipment of officers and enlisted men. These differences in detail caught the attention of the Military Police, who exposed Wang as a spy. |
