Post Import Laws and Rules

When I was a soldier stationed in Germany in the mid=1980's (in Mannheim) you could buy a Luger at a Rod & Gun Club, for example.

But, as I then understood it, you could not bring it back to the states because it was an implement of war.

Can anyone tell me what the rules really are? If I am in Germany again, under what circumstances may I come back with a Luger purchased there?

Thanks, I'm grateful.

If you take a gun over and can prove later via paperwork that you took one over, that is the easy way to bring one back.

Otherwise, you have to apply to the former BATF and request to import one. If it is a military weapon, you might have problems. I didn't take or bring anything back while I was over there, but could have and wished I had checked into more (I was there 1993-99).
