Default 28894 Germany w/eagle on chamber

Just inherited a luger, having trouble getting info on it

the numbers 28894 and Germany, DWM of course and a crest of some sort on the chamber, looks like an eagle w/a banner, arrows, olive branch? 6 pointed star in a circle, any help appreciated.

thanks

skieran

Sounds like you have a 1906 Commercial with the Great Seal of the United States on the chamber, or as it is usually called the '06 American Eagle. You did not indicate the caliber of your pistol, but from the serial number it is in a group of 9mm pistols. The 9mm will have a 4" barrel, and the 7.65mm (.30 Luger) will have a 4.75" barrel. There are several variations as to how the safety and extractor is marked. You might fill us in on these markings. If the pistol is 9mm the magazine may be marked Cal.9mm on the wood bottom.

Thank you. It's a 9mm with the DWM logo on the extractor. There seem to be no markings on the safety--it's simply grooved at the rear to provide traction.

I'm surprised that the star at the top of the Great Seal has 6 points instead of the 5-pointed stars like on the US Flag, by the way. (Had to use a magnifying glass to check it out). I guess that was just the Seal they used at the time?

There is no marking on the bottom of the magazine, and there is no part numbers on it, either. All the rest of the part numbers seem to match up, though.

Does this info seem to back up your original assessment?

Short of having the "Cal.9m/m." marked magazine, a plain unnumbered wood bottom mag is also correct, as many were issued this way. If your pistol was OFFICIALLY imported into the US after 1898, it should be stamped "Germany" on the front of the frame, below the serial number. Tom h
