I bought my first Luger

Thanks for the help from the guys on this forum. I have been in a bit of a rush because of NJ permits. But, I didnt want to make a bad deal either. You guys pointed me to Mr. L, Liberty, CC, etc.. and if nothing else it gave me a good basis for cost/value. So I was able to win an auction last night. I think I paid fair $915 for a nice looking shooter grade WWII Luger. I would love to have some of the more collector grade guns out there. However I plan to shoot this gun and didnt really want to take the chance of destroying a piece of history. This way I can enjoy the history first hand.
This is a mostly numbers matching, refinished '37. New barrel,grips,mag.

Congratulations! I agree that you have what should be a perfect shooter Luger. I also have a 1937 Mauser made Luger as my shooter...

Congrats...Now the hook has been set, and there WILL be others to keep this one company!! Let us know how it shoots when you get it to the range. Stick with std. velocity RN ammo in 115-124gr bullets. Enjoy.

Is the take down tool needed or is it similar to the 1911 take down tool that really isnt needed unless the gun is very tight or has some corrosion?

I have never used a takedown tool.

Not for take down, a screwdriver is as good, or better.

For loading magazines - yes, it is a useful tool, and a repro works fine for this at $6 unless you want to spend $50 or more for an original - "just because".

If I had a original Luger I might shell out the extra money for original tool. I picked up a repro with stamps off ebay for $10, just because. It can sit with my 1911 bushing tools.

How about aftermarket mags? Which ones work well for 9mm?

You can use either Mec-Gar, Mec-Gar or Mec-Gar.

What David said ^^^^^. I have been able to get three(3) Stoeger OEM mags to work for me with a bit of "tuning", but Mec-Gar is definitely my first choice.

If you are going to only load five(5) rounds or less in these mags, you can probably do it without the takedown tool, but a full load in a new mag requires the tool for assistance.....at least it does for me.
